I am trying to install the front crank seal. I do not understand how the pilot tool works. If I fit it to the crank to guide the seal on, how does the pilot tool come off? Does it pull through the seal or does it get cut out?

If I am installing the seal with the timing cover on the bench, as I did, the pilot tool seems to be too tight to go through the seal to be of any use.

I am not used to this type of seal. Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Brian

OK... the plastic seal guide is installed over the grank's snout. Then, with the seal installed into the front cover, and cover gasket in place against the gear case (held with a cap screw or something) push the seal/cover assy over the snout and guide firmly and the seal will slide through it with some effort involved. Then simply pull the claer plastic guide off the end of the snout and out of the seal.

Make sure the crank seal surface is dry/clean.

Once the cover is in place so to speak, remove the cap screw holding the cover gasket in place and secure all.

Okay, so it requires enough force that I will have to push with both hands near the crank snout to get it on correctly.

Thanks,

Brian

The alignment/guide deal doesn't go all the way over/onto the crank, it's just enough ramp to get the seal on without the lip rolling under. This is how I remember it. I could be wrong though because I remove the cover to put mine in.

That's about the way I recall as well. It's stepped. Goes on one way and stops about half way point cause it necks down on the opposite end.

Easy as pie right? Good luck.

This is a must as it is teflon and it WILL leak if there is any amount of oil on the snout or the seal lip. Use carb cleaner on a rag or lacquer thinner to clean. The rear main seal is the same design only about 5 times larger.
