front locker

I did a thread search but couldn't find any info on getting a front locking differential for my truck. Has anybody done this, what was the cost and how do you like it?

I think that there are a couple options out there. ARB and I think OX both make selectable lockers. Not sure if Detroit makes one yet for the AAM 9. 5

The problem is imho the axle shafts are not strong enough to survive with a locker. You can get one from Randys ring and pinion that is about 20% stonger than stock but I don't think that will be enough

The truck will be hard to impossible to steer, depending on how tightly the limited slip unit holds.

you may want to check with your local delear,i'm not cetain but i believe the powerwagon models came with a elect. front diff. from the factory.

An ARB or an OX locker works as an open diff untill you engage the locker the ARB uses air to lock so you will have the added expenses of an air compressor but will have the benefit of on board air. The OX locker uses a cable to lock it in so it is somewhat cheaper but you have to have a good path for the cable to run too your diff and you have to keep cable lubed and cleaned or it could freeze up with dirt rust or in colder temps water I have heard somewhere eaton is making an e-locker (electronic locker) but I can't find my page on it anymore this would be best one for ease of use or install but just rember all of these require you to drill a hole into your diff

You need to have locking hubs IMHO to run a locking front end.
A limited slip will be worn out quickly in a constant drive front
I would suggest only an arb for stock axle setup and then only
Activated where there is sufficient lack of traction

The OEM e-locker gets my vote. As long as you don't drive like an idiot with it locked you won't have any issues.

By OEM, are you referring to the one in the Power Wagon?

Yes, the front axle is the same.

I can guaranty you that stock axles will not stand up to a locker... ... ... . if you are in a bad enough place to need one.

Remember the Power wagon is way down on both torque and front end weight.

If you are rock crawling the truck then no it wont. But if you are using it as emergency insurance for a hunting/weekend warrior truck it will be fine as long as you dont turn it all the way and punch it!



The few times I wished I had one there was one front with 0 traction, so a locker would have been super beneficial. Then you just turn it off as soon as your done.

There are quite a few running them on the other forums. Its a fairly easy install and wiring from what I gather. Just need a switch in the cab.

I don't disagree that the AAM 9. 25 is barely enough for these trucks (think 95% rule), but if you are smart about when you use a selectable locker it shouldn't amplify anything.

I will eventually put one in, but its purely for emergencies and not normal use.

I have used ARB's on previous rigs and being selectable is great, since really open is the best 99% of the time.

That's what I was thinking, I don't plan on doing any desert racing just the occasional help in deep snow.
