Yes... . you are correct about the 3rd gens. The ball joints on them are going to fail prematurely no matter what you do ! They were designed the way they were for a good reason. They were NOT supposed to last.
But this is the first gen section. I never post in the 2nd 3rd or 4h gen sections. I have little to say about them.
As far as I am concerned Dodge stopped making trucks after 93. They were just over sized economy engineered cars from 94 up . They were built on a 5 year planned obsolescence instead of a 10 year as all cars/trucks used to be.
So future reference . Any statement that I make concerning trucks is solely referring to the 1972 to 1993 trucks.
If for some reason I decide to speak of the later generations I will state that in the first sentence. Be advised that there were many first gen parts that were held over and used on the second gens. So use the info accordingly if it applies. .
I spent half my life working with and developing the first gen trucks. I am retired now for the most part. I continue to develop solutions and or fixes for these trucks today because I want to and need some thing to keep me busy.
I know that all the posts are archived here on this site. I contribute to this site in hopes of what I leave here will remain long after I am gone. I almost died of cancer 5 years ago. I beat the cancer. But one day it will return.
Most of the people that were involved with the early development of the first gen trucks are now gone. I have no idea how long I will last. I encourage all of you die hard first genners to pull up all of my posts and print them out.
There's 40 years of experience in them . The majority of the information is fact ... not opinion! I just wish I could go back and do it all again. It really was an exciting career ! Oh yeah... . ball joints. . Moog is the best game still going.
But the Moog ball joints will not fix an under engineered suspension system. My first gen 93 uses the same part # ball joints as a 1972 D300... My daily 93 has 378,000 on it and still has the same ball joints and tie rods. It is the grease I use and how often I use it thats the secret. Theres no hope for the drag link and Idler arms. The diesel was just too heavy for them... . Good luck
I will disagree on Moog,They will not hold up even as long as the OEM on 3rd gens. Very few first gens getting used around here so I won't comment on how the first gen versions work
