I think my front driver side wheel bearing is going out.

I can feel it grinding up through the floor boards. When I replaced the ball joints last spring, the bearing was in two pieces. I put the inner half back in the steeringknuckle and it's been fine until now.

Aren't these supposed to be sealed?

Where can I find a parts diagram of the front wheel assembly? I'd like to do the repair myself.

And... . about how much do these things run?

Any suggestions on where I can find one?

Thanks a TON for the help.

God bless,

Ben

The bearing is a sealed, non-serviceable unit. Replacement is supposed to be the only option for reapair. Although apparently the bearings can be replaced without purchasing an entire hub. This is not the recommended service procedure but it has worked for some.

The hub would need to be pressed apart, the bearing replaced, and the hub pressed back together. If the race is damaged you will need a new hub. I think the part number for the bearing is Timken 387a.

As far as buying a new hub I think I have seen some guys getting these at NAPA for around $140-$160 and at the dealer you will likely pay around $200.

Thanks Cooker,

Nice to hear from you again.

I'll press forward.

My local, national-chain type auto parts store is telling me $200.

Does anybody have a part number (2500, 4x4, 8800#), a price, and a phone number for a mail order place that's better than the $200 ??

Thanks
