I've always put extra grease in the "alley" between the inner and outer wheel bearings on vehicles I've owned. I've been told that a good way to pack wheel bearings is to put the grease in a plastic sandwich bag and then the bearing and work the grease in with your fingers from the outside of the bag. So have I been wasting grease all this time by doing it my way?

Yes. The grease only does any good if its on the bearings. I've also seen folks cram the dust cap full of grease, another waste. It's good to also apply a little grease under the lips of the seal(s).

The bag is a good idea, I've just used disposable laxtex gloves or my bare hands.

I have one of those bearing greasers that looks like two funnels. I like it a bit better than doing it by hand.
