Question for my younger son.

He has a 2500 HD, 2013.5 Big Horn truck and needs to replace his front u-joints. The LH side is completed but he had to replace the RH side Wheel BRG. Wheel BRG frozen on and could not be reused. He purchased a new one on Sunday but would not fit, spline shafts of drive shaft would not line up per him. The BRG info that was attached said it would not work for drive ratios of 3.42. and per NAPA there are two different wheel BRG hubs priced a little different.

Has anyone heard or seen that there are two different Wheel brg hubs depending on gear ratio for 4th gen trucks?

Jim

I haven’t heard of that difference, but 2013 was a weird year for 2500’s. They have the 07-12 frame/suspension/axles but the 13+ motor.

Did he cross the wheel bearing part number to a 2012 part?

I just went through this as I have a 2013 2500. All things suspension related is 2013 and back. They changed the entire suspension in 2014. I would see if the part number of the wheel bearing that he has matches a 2014 or 2012. If it matches the 2014, it's not the correct bearing.

Also, I've not heard of a 2013.5 with the 2500. Was this a thing? I've always just referred to mine as a 2013 and never had an issue with getting the correct parts.

In 2013 the 3500's changed to the new chassis with Radius arms, the 2500's changed in 2014 so it was an odd year as it was the only year the 2500 & 3500's were a different front suspension.

Rockauto.com for standard replacement only list RWD or 4WD being different. Maybe they gave him a RWD unit. Head scratch-er for sure!

RWD is a totally different bearing with the IFS setup.
I'd also think he got the successors bearing.

No, I will tell him to do that also.

As far as to the 2013.5 model year that was mentioned at the TDR rally at the Cummins plant in Colombus IN. when we were there. For the new rollout of trucks with the 6.7L using DEF.

All 2013's use DEF thou, there wasn't a mid year change like 07.5 or 05.5.

Update,

He replaced the questionable RH wheel brg from ADVANCE AUTO PARTS (the only store that had a RH wheel brg in stock on Sunday) with a wheel brg ordered on Monday from NAPA. That one fit perfectly and he was back on the road by Monday Night.

Thanks for your response.

The 0.5 designation comes from the model year going July to June and the EPA regulations being tied to calendar year. Thus, there are 2004.0 through 2004.4 in that parlance vs. 2004.5 due to the tighter EPA regulations in January 2004 bringing the catalytic converter and 325 HP rating vs, the 2004.0 rating of 305 HP without a cat. Going forward to 2013, the first half of the traditional model year continued to use the old emissions package and the Rams were called 2012s, up through December 2012. January 2013 began the use of the DEF emissions package and the Turbo Diesels were called 2013s, or as was described at the Cummins rally, 2013.5 based on the old model year vs. EPA year designations.

Model year is Aug to Aug. Only way to have a half year designation is new model release before or after the traditional start of Aug 1st. An EPA change doesn't make it a half year, only body change or name change would warrant. If it was do to a change of components on vehicle to change the MY, There would be a lot more half year models out there! JM2C from working in dealerships. We would say there were half year changes but never refereed to them as a 0.5 MY unless they were sold that way do to new model release.

In 2013 the 2500 still used the 5 link front end from the 2004- 2013 trucks. Your friend needs to get the parts for the 2012 truck. A lot of parts catalogs get it wrong on the 13’s

This is likely a good rule for dealerships, but not in owners referring to their vehicles for components and maintenance/modifications.

Just with Dodge/Ram HD's I know of the following common 0.5 designations
98.5: Emissions/Engine
01.5: Rear Disc's
04.5: Emissions/Engine
07.5: Emissions/Engine

Yes, it's good to know the production date as changes with parts happen. MY is different then a production date modification. I always made sure that I had production date when I looked up parts that had differences know to have taken place. What you're referencing are not MY but production changes do to improvements and/or regulations that have happened. Different options can happen later in production but doesn't make it a different MY. Not splitting hairs on this, but that's how it breaks down for a MY.

Don't forget my '91.5:)

Engine, grill and radiator.

Seems like there was an 11.5? HO came out?
