First, I tried a couple searches on the topic presuming that this has been covered before, no luck. Then I had a look at the FAQ to see if something about this was there, didn't see anything.

So, after having had the fusible link fail from fatigue (since fixed) on my ~300k old '96 in remote part of Nevada that is almost Death Valley I've been pondering either outright removal of the solenoid and a Morse type cable replacement, or a supplemental/auxiliary linkage system to over-ride the solenoid in the Off condition should some part of that system fail again.

Any thoughts, threads, or concerns with such a mod? The convenience of the stock system is not a concern of mine, being stranded again by something that should be simple and robust and isn't, is a concern.

My concern would be in the worse case scenario of an accident a first responder may not know how to shut it down.
When the solenoid, relay or any of the circuit goes belly up it is so easy to bypass I tend to think it is best to keep it stock. When my Daughter-in-law called me broken down on I-15 with my Baby Grandson crying her eyes out and 50 miles from where I was I talked her through jury rigging it with the shoe lace out of her shoes. She was of course very proud of herself and I was very releived they were safe and on their way again.

Bill, thank you!

Bob, I'm thinking that if its a first responder that needs to know how to shut it off that there are bigger, more important concerns around it. Like fixing me, to you know where with the truck! :)
That said, having the manual system as a back-up would probably be the best plan.
Oddly, where we were when the fusible pulled apart (a PO mfg'd kluge) I-15 would have been the shortest hike.

I did the solenoid delete and it's worked great. I installed a pto cable through the firewall just in front of where your right knee would be sitting in the truck. Took the whole fuel shut off solenoid out and used some cable clamps to hold the pto cable to the fuel arm. So far hasn't vibrated loose. No welding here. I got the idea from a tdr issue (don't remember off hand which one). I can post some pictures of what I did tomorrow.

an even simpler idea,,is a cheap $2. 00 spring from the auto parts store,,,remove all the solenoid stuff,,hook the spring to the fuel lever so it's always under tension in the on position,,then a small wire pull to inside the truck to shut it down,,,simply pull on the wire when you want to kill the engine,,,this was my temporary fix 5 years ago,,LOL. . not the most hi-tech way,,but sure is simple and failsafe,,,i did get all the new solenois and stuff from Larry B's because it was cheap,,but never put it on since i like the failsafe idea. .

Yes, I remembered putting it in the magazine, but my cluttered old mind can't recall which issue. It's been several years. I checked the TDR photos I have in my computer "TDR file" before I posted my reply above, but I didn't find any. It must have been in a previous computer and the files were evidently lost/deleted somehow in the data transfers.

A "Search' on this 12-valve forum using the words "cable fuel shut off" revealed several threads.

If you guys REALLY want to get creative rig up a fuel shutoff that works like an old CAT loader. You have to pull the throttle pedal up to shut them down. .

I don't know how many of those poor old things ran all night because someone loaded up a wheeler load of gravel and then could not figure out how to shut the loader down. What other choice did they have, can't stall it.

Calling the guy that owned the loader would have been a step in the right direction, but that never seemed to happen... .

Mike. :)

Hey Mike,

On some I-H crawler tractors the hand throttle had to be pulled down past the idle position and held in that position to shut down the engine. If too see them idling for hours because the operator didn't know that.

How about those trucks and off road machinery powered by a screamin' 2-cycle Detroit diesel that had 2 shut off handles. One was shiny chrome or black and one was red. How many times did you have to show them to pull the shiny or black handle not the red handle. What happens when they pull the red handle and try to re-start it?:-laf

Reset the flapper... :-laf I don't recall how many times i've done that show and tell.

We have a yard horse with a 6-71 in it, still happens here from time to time. :D

I have seen a few move or twist (turbo editions) the flapper on the shaft so that it does not appear to be tripped. That takes a little longer to figure out.

If I am showing off for a true believer I make the 6-71 run backwards for a second or two... ... ...

Here are some pictures of my cable install

Pic of strap that cable is mounted to. Used large rubber washers to isolate vibration from dash. Sorry pics are upside down not sure why.

Pic of cable going through firewall. Drilling the hole though the firewall took a little bit. The pto cable was 20 dollars I think from aw direct. Nice thing is they were only 15 minutes from me so I could just pick it up. I used a 10 foot cable and cut to length. Followed all directions in the tdr.
