Did my first "fuel filter" change on my 2005. 5 CTD. Here are a few notes for those that want to try this. This was pretty much the same procedures that I used on my 2001.

1. Opened the fuel drain and had to click the starter to get it to start emptying (no flow just by opening the drain). Closed the drain when it was empty.

2. Opened the filter canister using a socket wrench on the top (I think it was 1 1/16").

3. Removed the old filter (was pretty grey in color but I didn't see a lot of junk on it after 10K on the clock). The filter is attached to the lid.

4. Replaced the "O" ring on the lid and put the new filter on and put it all back in the canister.

5. Screwed the lid back on without overtightening (probably around 10-15lbs torque).

6. Bumped the starter to get the lift pump (it's in the tank on the 2005. 5's) running. If your hearing is good you can hear it running and can hear a "click" in the cab when it cycles off. I cycled this three times to make sure the filter housing was full.

7. Started the truck and let her run for a few minutes.

I've used these basic procedures for years on my 2001 and now on my 2005. I've never had a problem starting back up and no "coughing" or "hesitation" with the engine.

Others will do this slightly differently, but this works for me... ;)

There is no difference to speak of, the G56 was introduced at the beginning and the NV5600 was fazed out at the same time, it does not make the 2005 a 2005. 5 because of this.

... "fuel filter" change ...

I have read in the manual where it says to "thouroughly clean inside of filter housing, filter cap and all related components. "

My question: how does one best go about cleaning the inside of the filter housing? Is just a clean rag sufficient to try and get deposit from the bottom?

i skip that step if the filter "looks" clean. if it has any "large" particles on it then i wipe it out with a lint free rag. i get them from work but you can find them at walmart. think cheese cloth or terry cloth, look for no lint or ultra low lint.

I have a question, what is a makes a 2005 a 2005. 5?

In January 2005 (half way through the 2005 model year) Dodge quit making and installing the NV5600 and replaced it with the G56. They also started putting the lift pump in the tank. Other then that, the 2005's are about the same. I use 2005. 5 to indicate the changes... ;)

Hmmmm? So an '05 with the NV 5600 does not have the LP in the tank?

I don't think that Dodge officially calls any models out by . 5 descriptions. As far as Dodge is concerned, mine is an 2004 model. I think the . 5 concept is a loosely used term in the industry, but not part of the official model description. That being the case, you can call your truck anything you want to. I refered to my 2001 truck as 2001. 9 as it was one of the last 2001s made and it had a 2002 paint color (Atlantic Blue).

Mine has the intake pump and the G56 transmission I do know it was built after the hold on the G56 transmissions to find the problem with the early one failing due to not enough oil in them.
