What kind of mileage between filter changes are you getting out of the fuel filter '01 24 valve and what are the general drivability symptoms when it is (past ?) time to change the filter? Any ideas?

I change mine approx every 12k-15k (I think the manual says 15k). For me that is twice a year. I have never pulled one out that looked bad. I would think the only symptoms might be low flow to the vp44 which might cause some bucking or hesitations. I do not doubt that I could go longer on a filter but it is not worth the 12 bucks to find out.

Changing the ff will tell you if your lp is working too :)

I do mine about once per year, but I have a 10 micron RACOR 690 right out of the tank to tidy things up before it ever really gets into the fuel delivery system.

I change it at 15k and it still looks good with good fuel pressure. As cheap as it is I just change it per factory specs.

speaking of cheap... I always here some of the guys here paying these high prices for filters.

I got fuel filters for 9. 99 each and oil filters (fleetguard strats 3894's) for 6. 99 each. This was just walking in at my local cummins distro and deisel repair shop.

Thanks. Yesterday, I changed the filter at 15,000 miles and the bottom of the filter housing was spotless, the filter seemed to be in good shape with the rootbeer color. The pressure drop across the filter from the schrader inlet at the filter and the port on the injection pump was 1. 5 psi drop before changing. However, the new filter does make a slight difference in the idle smoothness so I guess I will not let filters go past 15K.

Take a hacksaw and cut the housing off the filter if you want to see what it removed from your fuel. This will help you to consider shortining your interval to change, until it appears cleaner.

10k is enough miles for me to feel good about changing the fuel filter, easy to remember at every other oil change.

Good Luck

Same exact thing with my experience.

Cummins dealer said to change mine every 10000 miles. first time cost me $170. 00 to find this out so I change it now religiously. In and out in 10 min. and no problem starting back up.

Thinking of oil filter ?, The top or canister will screw off the filter housing on the Fuel filter No need for a hack saw . Ron Bissett in Metro Louisville Ky

I just changed mine today , with around 10k on it the filter looked good but but there was about 2 table spoons full of waxy substance in the bottom of the housing , I have been using Power Service quite alot but have not used it in the last 3 tanks , would the winter Power Service remove the residue that I could not get out ? I water drain almost every tank and have not gotten any water in the fuel . Why would I have wax build up in 90 plus temps .

wax buildup ??

vette75406,

I have no idea what it could be, maybe a by product of the additive you use. Mine was spotless in the bottom of the filter housing and I open the water drain maybe once every 5000 miles. I have never had enough water to activate the light even in winter and this is my fourth diesel in 23 years.

Ron I believe the filter is different on the 96-98 12 valve trucks.

Thanks
