fuel gauge question?

sorry, i know ive read this before, but does anyone else having problems with the fuel gauge? our 2001. 5 6 spd hos both seem to have a mind of their own as far as readings are concerned. mine stays on full for about 200 miles, then drops like a rock. the other truck shows low fuel light and tone while still above a 1\4 tank showing.

Mine is weird too. Mine indicated 1/8th tank remaining last night and the low fuel light came on. Then today, I filled up and it took 27 gallons.

And this for a 35 gal tank.

It seems like all of our trucks are like this... bugged the bejesus out of me... So I dropped my tank, and checked the float level, and found it to be about 2 3/4 in. off the bottom... So I modified (bent), the stainless float rod so that is was only 3/4 in. off the bottom... now when the needle rides on empty, and the lil' dinger go's off, I have about 2-3 gallons left. . works for me. . we're not idiots, I watch the fuel guage, almost as much as the rear view mirrow, so it's unlikley I'll run out of fuel... . Yes, I know the fuel is also there to cool the pump...

My last truck, a 98 2500 gasser, did the same as yours, didn't move until 200 miles then dropped like a rock. This one seems suprisingly accurate, so far.

sounds like something we'll just have to get used to. if this is the only problem that ive had so far i can live with it compared to some of the stuff that ive read on the ford and gm diesel boards. the low level light and tone should come on with 5 to 6 gallons of fuel remaining, and this a very handy thing to have when driving a diesel truck.

I have had my sending unit replaced a 1/2 dozen times. The Service Manager said that dodge is having a lot of proplems with the diesel sending units, no so bad with the gas units.

Do most of you guys with problems have diesel, if so dodge may replace if for you. they have replaced mine twice after the warranty ran out.
