There is a way to make power from this effect- I believe it is called ( large word ) magneto-hydrodynamic effect. The more luminescet ions may be of one charge. The less luminescent the other charge. To prove that the flame is actually bent and not just a portion put your finger in the original path, if you remove an undamaged finger then all the flame/ions are bent. If you pull back a stub then only the luminescent portion was bent. This was a SWAG scientific wild @$$ guess.
It is funny that some engineer thought that magnets wrapped around a steel line ( which would shunt most magetism through the steel ) could effect a non polar liquid. I think marketing had something to do with it. If the field was very strong there would be a temporary alignment, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging uses this( NMRI or MRI ). Fields that stong will pull a steel spliter out of your finger, or send an oxygen bottle through a patients skull. I don't think those litttle magnets are that strong.
