Hi

i plan on grindg my fuel pin and i have never had these pumps apart . Could some one give me a step by step on how where to do this? thanks

There should be something in the sticky under VE performance, bu tif not, here is a quick run down.

1)Remove AFC hose banjo bolt. Loosen connection at head and potmetal ine out of the way.

2) Get screwdrivers and vice Grips and break loose the 4 slotted screws on the top of the pump. Remove screws.

3) Remove cap. Diaphragm and cone are under there. Remove pin and grind the profile of your liking.

4) Installation is reverse of removal.

If you break the AFC line, not to worry, I have a fix posted in the Discontinued Parts section from about 2003/ 2004.

Thanks, Daniel. It's the grinding of the profile that I need to know more about. what should I be trying to change ? Do I follow the same basic shape or is there a whole other look I should be trying to achieve ? How much is too much ? thanks , Daniel (the son )

I ground mine after seeing one that Greenleaf had gone crazy on. :-laf

I used a much more conservative approach however. ;)

To describe it... I ground a deeper taper in what I would call the "mid section" of the pin. I did not change the deepest part, but only the mid range section on up to the top.

Does that description make sense to you?

If not send me your pin and I'll go crazy with it. :D

Make sure you grind in the direction of travel and polish it the best you can.

Have fun.

I left the bottom 1/3 to 1/2 alone, and ground a deeper profile in the upper half. This (in theory, anyway) would allow good low boost smoke control, while allowing more fuelling after boost had built up. I did mine on the side about 1/3 of the way around from deep to shallow.

Leave about 50% of the original thickness of the neck of the cone. grind off any more, and you risk breaking it.

DO NOT go all the way around. Just flatten one side to make the profile you want. Take a look at Old Smoky's fuel pin- it is round, except for the part that the guide pin rides on.

If you take the top of the pump off and replace the governor spring with the 3200 rpm "366" spring at the same time you can tell how deep to go on the pin pretty easily. You take the pump top and look at the lever/guide pin arrangement that rides on the fuel pin. If you are looking at max pin travel at max boost you just want that lever to bottom out on the housing. You really don't need too much grind at the richest setting to get there. I realized this after I had the pin ground and ground more than I needed to.

This probably does not make sense, but if you look at the VE pics or take the pump top off it actually becomes pretty obvious.

I did DP's AFC boost line fix with a solenoid valve inline to control when I want the extra fueling. His fix works great!

Where do I find a picture of an Old Smoky pin to look at. Thanks, Daniel P. S. I'm 17 and this is my first attempt at modifying a diesel so I really appreciate the help.

Heck O Gee, PB considered lots of us Youngsters. LOL

DBohl, Have you done a search for Old Smokey fuel pin? You will need to change the query to ANY DATE, as it defaults to 3 months back. I think that is right. There are a few pictures if I remember correctly.

Good luck and ask questions.

PS. I just did the search... 'bout 2/3's down the page there is a post by hdm48, writing about the Old Smokey pin. Old Smokey chims in on the post. Click on his "readers rigs" photos. The pin is on his page.

Great. . now we have Daniel contributing to the delinquency of minors on the board!! What next?

lol

dbohl, if you drove one of these things with the afc lever out of it you probably wouldnt waste your time grinding the pin

smoke control = right foot

remove the afc and you wont even know you are driving the same truck!

if you want to try grinding the pin and using the afc you can keep this in mind: the pin that comes into the fuel pin bore does so . 7375" off the floor. there is a plastic spacer that goes over the pin and i dont remember how thick it is but if you measure yours you can do the math and get a better idea how you want to profile the pin

i wanted mine all the way out which is only to the center of the bore, no further, in the full boost condition

but gl is right, that afc thing is for the birds

you can still drive smoke free if you want to

don

ps - took my truck over to my g/f's house tonight. first real trip since the mods to the pump. had the opportunity to show a brand new chevy owner (prob a $65k truck) how the old first gen's can run. there are some pretty good grades on the toll rd. he didnt like the haze i was putting in his face cruisin up a 5% at about 80 and thought he would drive around me. wrong

Hey guys here some food for thought, If you can locate a VW turbo diesel VE injection pump that is NFG rob the fuel pin & AFC spring from it, the spring isn't as strong as the Cummins VE spring & also about . 030 shorter, makes fueling come on sooner & with a little less boost, +++ The fuel pin on the VW pump isn't ground as deep so there is a lot more meat to play with when you do your custom grind job, This is what I've done and the results are very sweet, All measurements on the VW pin are exactly the same as the Cummins pin (excluding the cone shape), even the rubber diaphram will fit, Any VW turbo diesel VE pump from the years 85-92 will work fine. Grind away guys now you have room for a mega grind!!!!!! I was lucky I have a turbo diesel VW + a spare VE pump, So I Used the pin from the Cummins with the sharper cone angles to increase my VW's performance & ground on the VW pin for my Cummins, Just another way to perfect your low cost Cummins project
