Hello I have a 97 2500 5 speed manual EGR 180 hp 12v it has 287,000 miles runs Great I occasionally pull A 7000 pound travel trailer. I was wondering what fuel plate you would recommend for my application. It's pretty much a daily driver weekend warrior I have exhaust gas temperature gage boost gauge and fuel pressure gauge. The truck is completely stock I have on order 5 inch Turbo back exhaust, AFE intake horn ,BHAF,AFE stainless steel high flow exhaust manifold, AFC adjustment screw, South Bend dual disc clutch with upgraded input shaft, and a number five TST kit, does anybody have any input on what would happen to my EGT's with these modifications? And what kind of horsepower should I be expecting?Thank you so much!

Forget the fuel plate and get AFC Live from Power Driven Diesel, It makes tuning the engine way easier and allows you to set the tune while driving down the road.

I ran a #10 plate for years in my '96 5spd and was very happy with how it ran and never once regretted it, EGTs were manageable. Then I got hungry for more fuel and ground my own plate. The adjustable setup looks nice but I can't see spending that kind of $$ for what you gain. Once my plate is where I want it (usually full forward or just back a bit) I drive for years without getting into the AFC to move it again. If it's a bit smoky down low then adjust the connection between your right foot and your head when needed.
Sorry I can't comment on the #5, never ran one.

Mike

The ole stand by is a TST # 6 plate kit because its fairly usable with a decent turbo. The #5 will be hot depending on how far forward it is with the stock turbo. The 4K gov kit is interesting, mostly used for racing behavior. The 3K gov spring set up is more practical and won't cause valve float. I would not rev the crap out of an engine with that many miles and stock valve springs.

When towing the egt issue will be front and center, but with stock injectors you will be fine if you watch the gauge. I ran my old 160 hp truck with a #6, BHAF, stock injectors, 4" straight exhaust etc. for a while and I still had to back out of it when towing due to egt with a 10K arctic fox TT But, my 3.54 auto truck ran 900 degrees towing down the interstate with a #6.

My advice would be to keep the modifications conservative if your really towing often. Even with all my tweaking and HP I can't use 40 pounds of boost pulling hills loaded for long. The fun part is unloaded running, while towing I can't use the throttle much without hurting something. I personally use a BD valet switch when I'm in town towing, out on the highway I throw the fuel at it and control egt with my foot and gear selection.

I've ran mine for years at 1,000 to 1,100 degrees towing big trailers and the engine has survived great. My 1995 dually burns zero oil still. I back off the throttle at 1250 myself while loaded. Going to a larger turbo has its pros and cons, but when towing I can run 30 to 35 pounds of boost and stay under 1,000, but I stay above 2500 rpm when pulling hills. I don't regret spending the bucks on a big single turbo set up, but I always wanted a mild twin set up to loose the lag while solo.

Just make sure your turbo is healthy if you decide to add anymore fuel, you need air to burn the new fuel.

Thanks for all the advice ! Ssage thanks for the detailed right up! I really appreciate it. It looks like a #5 plate for my truck will be a little less than a # 11 for a 215 pump .I have a 180 egr 5speed so i guess i should be at 270/675 with just the plate I'm wondering what the exhaust manifold airhorn 5 inch exhaust will do above and beyond that. Also thanks for recommending the TST live kit. Does anybody have any other advice when it comes to this kit ? And as far as installation I cannot find anything

I'm wondering what the exhaust manifold airhorn 5 inch exhaust will do above and beyond that.

Next to nothing. The stock 3" exhaust will flow to 400HP. All the 5 inch will give you is a different tone. I saw no difference in performance or temps with my 3 piece exhaust. The intake is a cosmetic change, not much else. I suggest you do some research before you commit to the BHAF. Virtually every excessive blowby thread I read involves a truck with a BHAF installed. Of course, BHAF is a generic term, so there isn't any standard in the different brand's filtration efficiency. To test it submit an oil sample using the stock filter, then another with a BHAF. My money says the silicon reading with the BHAF will be higher.

For cheap go with #10 plate so you don't lose timing at higher rpm

more advanced options are AFC live, AFC Live 2 and the Attitude Adjuster

I will be getting me an AFC Live Stage 2 as soon as I can swing it.

I don't understand this line at all. The plate has absolutely nothing to do with timing.

Unless you are very young you are going to hate the 5'' exhaust. With the 4kgsk you need to replace your valve springs.Match port the exhaust and turbo while they are off.Personally I would not get to carried away leaning hard on a 300k engine
