about a month ago i installed a fuel pressure gauge. Upon installation i realized i had a problem. I made an apointment with the dealer shortly after but the soonest i could get an apointment when im off work is this coming saturday. Over the past three days my fuel psi has become irratic--mostly low i called the dealer today and he does not have a lift pump and will not order one until they check out my truck on saturday and then it will be another month before i am able to make the 45 min journey to the dealer when they are actually open. Anyway it has started dropping to 4 psi at times normal driving and pegged on zero up the mountain. I did a starter bump tonight and the lift pump sounded like a 6 cyl engine running on two cylinders and then smoothed out somewhat. could there be a relay or electrical connection for me to check? i wiggled the wires and plug going into the pump but no diff.

p. s. could someone tell me why my truck info does not show below? thanks alot

DieselSam,

I would get something written about your lift pump pressures being low, and if they cannot or will not get in one to replace on Saturday, when the lift pump does die have it towed to the dealer from wherever and give them the tow bill. Make them give you a rental at no charge to you, as they have been told the pump pressures were low. Get loud if you have to, but make them fix it and test the VP-44 before they give it back to you. Take notes on when you called them, if either pump gives you trouble in the future you will have something to fall back on.

Today i talked to the diesel tech at the dealer and he agreed to order a pump. One hour later the service manager called and said that the pump is backordered --------i'm #4500 in line

hopefully this means they are changing pumps or suppliers but till they build some pumps what am i to do this is my only vehicle

oh well

My lift pump was back ordered for over a week in December. It is very possible that they are still behind.

You might try checking in to a Cummins distributor for your lift pump. Whether it be an actuall Cummins parts shop or someone like Freightliner. Freightliner is where I just bought my new lift pump, in a sealed Cummins box. And it was cheeper than from Cummins.

I'm not sure if you feel comfortable doing the pump swap yourself, but I myself was pretty nervous the first time. After it was all finished I realized there really isn't that much to mess up.

Good luck !!

Yeah, ... . what JPLB22 said, check wit ha local Cummins shop. When I bought mine last year it was nearly $100. 00 less than the dealer and it think it included the new wiring harness adapter too.

You want a PN 3990105 from Cummins. You don't need the harness on an 01. Price should be ~$150. Dodge PN is not the same, and a LOT more $$.

Call Lane Anthony (TDR member) at Cummins NW in Portland, Or. if you have trouble locally. 888. 289. 0900

Ditto on the part number above. I just picked up one at Cummins today in Irvine, Ca. for 148. 13.

If you find you do need the harness, it is Part # 4025182, and cost 7. 60.

All the dodge dealers around here say they are on backorder, and they want 270. 00 for them!

You need to add the info to the signature section on your user control panel.

Presuming that you have not voided your warranty with the stea... dealer, replace the pump yourself, maike an appointment to bring your truck in, and put the old one back on when you get there.

1- Tell them after they decide your's needs replacing, you have one in the tool box, use that and reimburse me.

2-Let them replace it and keep your other one as a spare.

MAKE SURE THEY TEST THE VP44! DOC - U - MEN - TA - TION!!

Ditto on the DOCUMENTATION! This is what I wish I had done a better job at. I'm in the middle of fighting with the dealer because my LP gives 0psi when < +5* with only slight amount of throttle. Dealer has tested and retested and says it is fine, but they are testing in their nice warm shop where the LP works within spec. Going back today to try and just get the truck back without being fixed and without having to pay their $$$ diag fees. Plan on documenting everything from here forward - probably take some video of the pressure gauge and the temp and so on and save it just in case my VP44 goes south between here and August when my warranty runs out. Plan on visiting the local Cummins distributor to get a new LP which I'll install myself.

I think DC is quite strict on when they are allowed to replace these pumps. It's a "restricted" part or something like that.

I hope you don't get caught in a pickle like I am right now. I wish you the best getting it taken care of. Document everything!

here some more info , call your dealer have them buy one outside from the local cummins supplier to put on your truck . if they say they cant then they just dont want to do it for you cause they can , I currently work at a gm dealer parts dept and we do it all the time , what ever it takes to get the customer taken care of, the dodge dealer I worked at in the past bought parts from the local cummins dealer on a regular basis because they would make more money on the parts that way by selling the part using the dodge part number . I once ordered a lift pump from cummins paid next day air sat. delivery and it was still 5. 00 less that the dodge part number. the extra money just goes into a differnt account to benefit the parts profit margin.
