My 1st gen "Golden Oldie" Motorhome gives me test advantage since I am always fully loaded (the MH) at about 12,000lbs plus with towed car.
When I first test drove it at the dealer(was a trade in, 60,000 miles) it would not do over 40mph. Salesman thought it was a 4cyl and no one had, or wanted to look. My brother runs a Diesel repair shop looked under found a crushed exhaust, I bought it cheap (really) joined TDR and here are the results of minor changes.
Fixed exhaust(still needs more size) Ran better. (bought brother beers)
Changed all filters and cleaned screen in fuel tank transfer pump. (ran better (more beer)
Got gauges after reading steady warnings from TDR.
Replaced filter(came with big filter, lots of room up front) added "Home Depot kit" air intake 4"x6" floor vent with 4" outlet (inlet if used at your house)to feed filter. The original intake was under hood, hot air, the new was placed to catch only outside air.
The effect on egt was pretty noticeable. (more beer)
Then I turned in the fuel screw 180 degrees, played with the smoke adjustments.
During the process I took two trips to Pocono raceway. The first was ok but overall slow, really weak on hills. Next after air intake mod same trip was much better, lower egt more speed and stronger on hills. Still hard to believe the difference. The original intake may have been in a dead air spot or somthing.
Third trip was over same route but I went past Pocono and continued to Myrtle beach. (more beer). I was able to move along with traffic, had good power on hills. Steep hills left me climbing with trucks but not being a hazard to navigation. I drove by the pyro and never felt the engine was in any danger.
While I would like a little more climbing stregnth I think my problem is gear related. 10mpg.
The bottom line is that with good detailed info, full of warnings from TDR I was able to turn a dog into a useful machine.
Thanks to all, and any advice welcome.
