Has anyone had a problem with there F. S. D. Relay or knowlege of an intemittent problem, where the relay works fine then it will not energize but if you open the hood and push up on the selinoid shaft with the ign sw on,the relay will stay energize. Then the next several times it will energize perfectly. When it fails it is usualy when I am in a hurry and can not take the time to check it out then when I have time to check it out,it will not fail (ofcourse). Does anyone know of this problem, I know it is a dual coil(energize-hold) relay. I have the wireing diagrams. ((((((((((((((((((((((((Hey guys since I posted this I have been waiting for the selinoid to act up again and it has not yet,I do not know what it's waiting for probobly for me to be in a hurry again, I have tried to pin point the failure to something like every so many truns of the ign key but that did not work. I appreciate all the response's I got and wish I could say I found the problem but I can't. As soon as I can find the problem I will post the findings by editing this message again. Thanks to all. Bill,

Have you put a meter on the "pull on" wire when it doesn't work? That's the white one in the big three wire connector on top of the engine just behind the air horn. If you have 12v there then you probably have a bad solenoid. It's a good idea to clean all connections involved and see if that helps.

Check the condition of the wires going into the solenoid. Mine had chafed on of the injection lines. Would short out occasionally, (always at the WRONG time!).

Shame on you.
If you have 12 v must be the pull off switch???If you replace it an it still won't work--then you might check the ground wire.
12 volts isnt squat if you dont have a soild ground . Let's call it a neg 12v. .

I have a 95 12 valve and I have that problem currentally. I have to lift the solenoid when it doesn't work. Sometimes I can shut off the key and turn it on again and it will work. I about ready to order one and the cheapest I found it is 145. 00.

The Fuel shut down solinoids on our trucks are of low quality and poor design, this is further proven since Cummins has totally redesigned it.
Do Not buy a replacement from Dodge!
Go to your local Cummins shop and get your replacement, You will need the engine serial number to get the right one.

The New one from Cummins is massive in comparison and comes with a new mounting bracket and all related hardware for alot less dollars than just the solinoid from Dodge.

Hey..... just pull back the rubber boot around the siloid and spray it with wd-40... . and your problem is solved. I have 145 of the engines in my fleet and I have seen this happen alot. They get rusted inside and hang up sometimes. Try it!

I had the same problem. Put up with it for 6 months until I finally changed the solenoid out with the new Cummins part that Ted J talks about. I did squirt mine like Hyper advises and it did help for a little while.

The part number on my invoice from Cummins NW is :

Part number - 3800723
Description - Kit, Fuel Solenoid
Product Code - CECO

Afraid mine's going south, as well. Whenever I start my truck, I always tap the throttle a little. When it hangs, the throttle is super stiff, won't tap. Turn the key off and then back on, fires off like normal.

Don't know, that's why I threw it out there. That's how it feels, though. Like I said, switch it off and then back on and she fires right off. I'm gonna try cleaning it per Hyper's suggestion. Thinking about trying spraying it out with an electronic cleaner, as I'm wondering if the oily residue WD40 leaves might actually wind up attracting more dirt.
