Have any of you more knowledgeable members ever come up with a simple system to keep the engine running for a couple minutes, allowing cooldown for turbo. I know there is a system for sale but, the cost is about 250. 00!! That sounds steep to me. Surely there is an easy and simple way to wire one up. Any thoughts on this.

A friend made one from a wind up bathroom heater switch, just $15 and some wire. The spring wound switch requires no power to operate and is adjustable from 1-5 minutes. Just wire 12v+ though it to your fuel shut off solenoid. Set the timer, remove your key, lockup and walk away, when the timer ticks down your truck will shut down. Granger 6X545 is the switch to use. Use it without the faceplate to make it more compact.

I pulled these two posts out of thread!

I spilt the thread and gave this its own thread. I did edit the first post to change the title! However I can't change the title :( I tried. Ok after a lile more "effort" I was able to change this thread name to the proper name!!! Enjoy... .

And yes the "plug in" Turbo Diesel Lifesaver is $240, worth every penny, I would have paid more for it. If its too "rich" for you then you might consider the Isspro Turbo Temp monitor, its a lil bit cheaper and shuts down one you get to a certain temp, not exactly sure whats involved, but joelpry just installed one, and of course Steve StLaruent wrote and article on it (Issue 31).

So theres an option I guess, although as I said before the TurboDiesel Lifesaver is worth everypenny, plug in no wires to cuut, has a kill switch (securtiy switch).

illflem is right on target with the timer. I have considered doing the same thing.

'Bout the only thing I would do different is add a relay and add overcurrent protection.

Altronics makes a good timer board for 12 volt applications and can be adjusted any way ya want from seconds to minutes.

Spaceace, that unit looks good, I just wonder if 90 seconds is long enough. Prices are in Australian dollars. I also noticed shipping to New Zealand would be $22 AUS, the rate to the US isn't mentioned. They do have some interesting stuff though.

They state minutes though. Maybe the 90 sec delay is from a temp input???

Austraila IS a problem now isn't it!

Is 12v DC the same in Austrailia or is it -12v DC south of the equator?

Shipping from AU isn't to bad if you specify shipping by boat. It's about 1/5 the cost, but here is a little secret. Although they will tell you boat takes 6-8 weeks, usually (all the times I have sent something to AU) they put the small packages on the plane anyway.

Our dollar is really strong is Australia right now. $30 AUD is about $16 USD.

For $16 I'm ready to order one an check it out. Anybody else interested?

Actuallty the timer is not the exact one I was referring to but, this one seems like the way to go. Only drawback is the 90 second cut-off time. This can be fixed by adding another timer to the equation to extend the time.

Remember to use overcurrent protection on the install.

Those solenoids are kinda spendy... .

Altronix timers.....

I have used Altronix timers quite a bit when I worked for a security co. Very good products IMO. Most that I have used are adjustable for minutes or seconds ie. 1 -90 sec. or 1 -90 min. They operate from a trigger input + or - adjustable. A N. O. switch works fine here to start the preset time cycle. And the size of most is smaller than a cigarette pack so it can be tucked away easily.

The current draw to operate them is minimal. The Form "C" relay's will not handle larger currents though. What is the current draw of the fuel shut off solenoid??

A better way would probably be to find some kind of temp sensor to activate a relay to do the same thing. Using the existing EGT probe from your gauge might work if you could figure a way of converting the resistance output to a usable trigger. Probably should have finished electronics school:mad:

As it takes my truck forever to get to 250° pre turbo I have been looking into this a bit. Funny I spent nearly $40K on my truck and I'm too cheap to spend $250 to keep it around a while longer:( Then again I do like to play:) Waiting on my back ordered manuals from DC. Then I'll make a decision on whether I think it's feasable or not.

Edit: The company I was refering to is "Altronix". Available through security system dealers. Not sure where else. Here is one model www.altronix.com/p_html/6030.htm

BigWB,

I am very familiar with the timer board you speak of. That form C relay will work for the current draw on the solenoid, I would rather add another larger one though. Use the smaller one to trigger the big one. At least it will on the 12 valve. I am not familiar with the 24 valve solenoid. Could be the same though.

I was going to do this awile back but, decided the small amount of gain was not worth it to me since I am changing my turbo anyway.
