Thanks Joe and Kim for the clarification - I confused the fuel heater relay as being for the hold-in relay. Makes sense the hold-in is low-amp with that thin (18g) green wire on the solenoid plug, and the color makes more sense now too (vs that red/white for the fuel heater).

All I have is a wiring harness from the 1997 and am wiring the engine into my 1978 ford crew. The fuel heater wiring was completely fried to the bare wires (from the wreck of the 1997 donor truck perhaps?) so I didn't have that to go on. I'll check my old Ford's ignition source to ensure adding a little bit more to the mix won't overdue it and make sure it is on a low-amp fuse.

Now I know where that grey plug near all this used to go to - the heater! I may or may not rewire the fuel heater. Colorado is generally mild in the winter - but we did just have record low temps < -20!

thanks, jon.

The fuel heater wiring can burn up if the relay sticks or the temp sensor burns up. If that happened, then the fuel heater is probably bad and may be a air leak. If you don't think you need the fuel heater you can take it out of the assembly and eliminate a possible leak source. The bottom part (pre-filter) will bolt right up to where the heater was. The large screw that holds the fuel heater on is really just an adapter.
