Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Help Low Oil Pressure

Pre-strainer

I open up mine every 2nd filter change. I have found that water will get trapped there before the fuel filter. You will not know that water is in there it and the water could freeze and crack the housing. It has happened to me 2 times from buying fuel on route 80 in PA. Its good maint practice to check it. The o ring and screen are reusable many times. Don't over tighten and it will last.

I lay a piece of poly on the ground maybe eight feet square then drive onto it. Any fuel that gets away from me and some always does, does not get a chance to soak into the ground.

Your pressure is still low but I doubt it will hurt performance. You should be seeing 22-30 psi. Try the pinching off the return line trick I posted above. [/QUOT

When I changed the filter and dump the fuel in the filter out, there were a bunch of black flakes that came out I poured the fuel in a small container then strained the particles out in a towl they dissolve when you pick them up, its like a soot or something any ideas... . Is that normal trash you pick up at the stations??

The black powder you are seeing is the most common contaminant for others also.

My understanding is it's fine metal debris from tanks, pipes and pumps in the transport phase that fuel goes though before ending up in your tank.

First time I checked mine at 80k, it was loaded with that "black powder". Checked it twice since. Second time only a little and third time almost nothing.

fuel stop

FTR- Cummins Michigan in GR was $85 for an overflow valve.
It was an Amoco station at exit 41. A Truckers stop with cheap diesel fuel. Thats the old exit number, I don't know the new one and I don't stop there anymore. The bathrooms were a disaster too.

grtescpa,

Thanks. I remember buying fuel across the street at a Texaco? and I couldn't believe that the Amoco station was still in business. The place looked deserted. The Texaco wasn't too much better and neither were the restrooms, but at least the fuel was ok.

Old exit 41 is out in the middle of nowhere. I don't get on 80 much but the Buckhorn (old exit 34) or the stop in Bartonsville (old exit 46) were always good. Rule of thumb as always, lots of trucks, lots of fuel moved.

Well I think I have problems..... I'm not even getting 20 psi now... . I purchased a overflow valve havent put in in yet... . However I do have a new pump if I have to put that in... . It drops to almost 5psi when I accel... then holds at 15... If I put it in park and rev it it will go to 20 then drop back to 15 and hold there..... OH BTW I'm taking this guage out of my truck I cant handle the buzzing I'm getting I even have a snubber on it.....

There is an additional square cut o-ring that is not in the kit - number 3834185-S cost me 68 cents. You may or may not need it. I haven't pulled my filter yet - next oil change I will.

The kit 3845400-S cost me 5. 72 plus shipping - they didn't keep that in stock around here.

o-ring for what... . the wix filter comes with them if that is what your talking about... ... .....

Are we talking about the square cut o ring that fits between the top of the heating element and the housing? If so this one was not included in my kit from Cummins.

The snubber isn't doing it's job. They come with several different passageway sizes, yours must be too large. Just install a needle valve and crank it open till the gauge barely starts reading, there will be no buzz. Your gauge might not be reading right if it's buzzing also.

I put a overflow valve in and it seems alot better pressure wise... the new valve was a little different than the old one... the new one has a plug you can remove I guess for cleaning or something... . anyway the pressure now is 18 idle and goes to 25 on a free rev I havent tried driving yet..... Im going to have to get that valve I cant handle the hammering its doing... the snubber I got is rated for 60 psi and fluids with a thickness of oil... .
