This is a question to any of you who have had the misfortune to run out of fuel... when you filled your tank from empty, how much fuel could you get in??

I've driven around with the little fuel pump illuminated for a couple of days and still haven't been able to put 30 gallons in the tank. I'ld just like to know how much of the advertised 34. 9 gallons capacity is actually usable.

Thanks!

P. S. I'm sure that your running out of fuel was due to a mafunctioning fuel gauge... and NO fault of you own!

I haven't ran out of fuel yet . . but I have been able to get 31. 862 gals in. The gauge read a hair left of "Over E" with 672 miles highway, unloaded, flat traveling @ 65-70 mph.

That's as brave as I want to get.

That beats my limit (so far). Twice I've put in 33. 1. There was a width of space between the needle and the 'E' tick. When the needle is fully on the 'E' tick, it takes about 28 ga. I often put in 25 and occasionaly put in 28.

Well this has to do with my 95 but its the same fuel tank as our 01 I believe. This last weekend I ran it dry, stupid fuel guage. I filled up a plastic gas tank with 5. 5 gallons of fuel. Took me 10 minutes to get it started and fueled up with 28. 5 gallons two miles away for a total of 34. 0 gallons.

So far 31. 9 and the light on for about 50 miles. We will be pushing it to the limit Friday as we head off to Reno to pick up some medical supplies #ad
. The map shows 582 miles one way and I will have our 4500# travel trailer following us (I hope).

The most I ever pumped on a fill up was 31 gal. The low fuel warning had been on for some time. I think with the way Diesel foams you would have a hard time getting more than 35 gals in a 36 gal tank even if it were bone dry to start.

Well, at least my truck has the record in something..... 35. 5 gallons. Bone dry to able to see fuel, not foam, in the neck. It was also kind of reddish. #ad

Thanks for the info! This gives me more confidence in my truck's range... but probably won't have the same effect on my co-diver #ad

Filled it up once with 32. 9 gal. light was on . I sweat bullets until I was able to get to a station. Much relief when i filled it and realised I had over a gallon to go... .

I had about 500 miles on a tank and the light came on pulled in to the truck stop and it DIED. It took about a minute to get it started and pulled to the pump. Only put in 27-28 gallons.

I noticed before when I replaced the fuel sender the whole fuel pickup assembly slides in a grove which if it gets hung up on the ware spots it would run out of fuel before you are accually out.

Talked to the local Dodge Mechanics and he said if It happens sometimes you can use a rubber mallett and hit in the middle of the bottom of the tank and that should be enough to drop the pickup down.

Maybe Dodge should include a rubber mallet with the jack kit since they don't seem to be making an effort to improve that damn sender that so many of us have trouble with. Reminds me of my '63 Chevy,I carried a hammer in the glove box to pound on the starter motor when it hit it's dead spot. Went on for three years before the starter quit all the way!Wonder how many years you can gain beating on a Dodge fuel tank?

While on vacation in Dallas last year, I was on my way back towards my hotel (diesel station across the road), when the baby semi sputtered and quit. I knew I was low, but boy did I feel stupid going dry. Called Roadside Assistance from the cell phone, and a guy came out with 2 gallons of #2. Poured it in, primed the fuel pump under the hood (pumped that sucker about 50 times before it caught!), and the Cummins sprang to life again. Drove the 1 mile to the station, and it took an additional 32 gallons, for a total of 34 added. Considering the floor surface area of the tank, that one remaining gallon was probably spread too thin to get picked up by the pump.

I once rolled into my usual stop for fuel with the warning light on; trip odometer also confirmed that I was just about empty. With some spare cans that I carry along (total capacity = 25 gal. ), I bought 61 gallons of fuel that day. I know that I only put 25 gal. in the cans, so that leaves 36 gal. for the truck's tank. You figure out where the other gallon came from, I can't. BTW, the truck never quit running, so technically I didn't run out of fuel.
