I was told today by the Chrysler Zone HEAD that my fuel injection pump is out. After 3 weeks of a rental car I now have to pay for that and they are going to restrict my warranty. He said all of my modifications on my waste gate, the high intake manifold in the Banks Power Pack caused my fuel injection pump to go out. They also said it was going to cost $10,000 to replace. Is there anything I can do to fight the dealer and Banks????? Are they stupid or what? Please, I need advice it sure would be appreciated.

If nuthing else can be done about it.

Tell them you will supply your own inejction pump and call Piers to see if he has any. At most it should be $1400 for the pump itself. I think the dealer likes to charge around 3 to 4,000 for the pump. Or better yet see how much Cummins will charge you for the install labor.

They will prolly charge you quite a bit on troubleshooting it so you can't get out of that.

As far as fighting the dealer I am sure there are a couple of ways you can go..... you could call Banks... but most likely they will tell you to take the dealer to court.

Ask them to give you "restricted warranty" in writing and the reason stating why it is restricted.

Technically they have to prove your mods killed the pump.....

Tow it out of there and get a second opinion. I could see around $2000 dollars for an injection pump and labor. Some one will pipe up here with other solutions, possibly a good referal for your area. Why did it take three weeks to figure out your pump was failed? A Johnson

Injection Pump

Why did it take so long????? Well they thought it was the modification on the waste gate, map sensor, blown up turbo and engine (even though the engine ran), they did every test that they could do and everything showed okay and then when the ZONE guy came he said it was the injection pump from the modifications. They also had to get a computer program from Michigan.

One dealership here told another member his pump was out due to his "box"... ... ... picked up truck took it to Cummins, bled some air out of the lines and all was good.

It seems sometimes dealers love to point at the boxes and say yep... its the injection pump.

Is there a Cummins shop around you could take it to?

Since it took them so long to diagnose and everything ask them how the injection pump failed, or what is the evidence that its a bad pump?

injection pump

i got cummins abot 20min from my house. they said i had a box on it. i taken all the wires out even the box to.

Ask them to break down the costs... ...

pump cost, labor, troubleshooting.

Just would be curious to see why its so exspensive?

Normally when the dealer tells someone you need a new pump its around $4000 to $5000.

Which box did you have? Was it jsut the Banks stuff? Most likely they just saw the pump wire that was nicked or marked from the connection? They look for that..... theres even a bulletin that tells them where to look.

WHAT A CROCK

It really sounds like you are being used a guinea pig on this fuel system modifcation issue. I would like to know exactly how higher intake manifold pressure could POSSIBLY cause the VP44 to fail... . does the stealer think the higher boost is going to cause backfire through the injectors or something??? This is total BS. The major cause of VP44 failures has been fuel starvation and rotor galling caused by the damned sorry-butt fuel transfer pump!! Boost pressure has nothing to do with it! They need to describe to you in detail, in writing, exactly how the Banks system caused this failure. Tell them it better be something that holds up in court.

On the other hand, this is exactly why I made ZERO drivetrain/engine modifications to my Ram when it was in warranty. As a Case-IH service manager, I have seen how an owner can step in deep doo-doo playing with with the fuel system. :( And I personally think Banks is hanging their butts out the legal window encouraging owners to make these changes.

Rip off

Ten grand for a pump ,Tell them to put in writing so you can think about it . And I would post the name of the dealer and zone rep too so that every one would know who there Friends or adversary are in advance . I would ask Mr Gail Banks how he stands on this matter and if he would put it in a letter to the zone rep to clear up any misunderstanding about what the mods do and how they work ect . The dealer will out of the goodness of his hart will offer to cut the price in half as a good will gesture only five thousand dollars yea. wish you luck and hope you get some help from some of the members of the TDR soon . LOL Ron Bissett in LOUISVILLE KY:D

Please get the breakdown for us as Kat asked.

I could see them asking you to pay for some of the troubleshooting, but at some point they should have advised you that it wasn't warranty(like after 1-2 hours) and then asked if you wanted them to continue with T/S.

I would tell them that they can forget all but 1-2 hours of troubleshooting if you did not authorize it. A Johnson

Small claims court is cheap and when the big wig in Detroit gets the letter you should get your pump! I would include Banks also.

I work for a car dealer and we are fair. It sounds like Chrysler is not!

Fuel Injection Pump out

Here's the dealer that's giving me the problems. Napa Chrysler Dodge, Napa, California. The ZONE guy's name is Stan from Pleasanton, California. Only 10,000 miles on my engine and still looking for advice as to what to do about this. I'm going to get the break down of what they did and why it's taken so long. Hell, they haven't even fixed my oil seal in the back of the transmission and they've told me they've fixed it at least 3 times and they haven't even touched it or ordered the part. Thanks guys.

First do what the guys above have suggested. If that does not work get a Lawyer  Tow the vehicle out of that dealership today!!! Don't pay them anything since they did nothing.

What is actually wrong???

Ctingler... . As I don't know why or what the truck was doing before you took it in, if it is driveable get out of there quick... . It may be the injection pump? It may be the lift pump? It may be a combination of both? In any case, $10,000 buys you a new engine... . $1100-1300 will buy you a new injection pump, a new lift pump around $135 and some help from some friends (who know what they are doing $0). Get to a reputable shop or some TDR members can chime in and tell you what to do in your area...

Same old same old

Like HeberRam asked, what symptoms did you encounter prior to taking it to the shop? Did you

romp on it and have it die when you let off?

I'm not to far away to help you. The last time we tangled with a dealer and they canceled a warranty claiming the pump was dead it turned out to be a bad injector!!!

Fuel Injection Pump

After putting on Banks Power Pack the truck was running good for about 5 min. , then it started to smoke (white & black smoke) and then it was running real rough, then it felt like the accelerator had a governor on it and I could only go about 20-25 mph and that was with the accelerator pushed all the way down. It idled good, it shifted good but it wouldn't go past 20-25 mph. No, it never did die.

Usually if the pump is bad it dies and that's all she wrote. It's interesting to note that the symptoms you mentioned are the same as the truck I referred to that had the bad injector. He had installed an Edge EZ and there after it began to run poorly. It smoked like you said and was running quite rich. The dealer in Twin Falls said it was the EZ which was no longer on the truck at all, and the pump was shot. I arranged for the owner to bring the truck to another dealer (Carrigan Motors in Utah) where

the problem was correctly diagnosed by Clay as a bad #4 injector. The tip was cracked and the injector was not sealing. It just smoked a lot and ran poorly. Your truck sounds like it's idling cleanly so I doubt it's the same injector problem.

I would analyze the fuel supply to determine you don't have a fuel starvation problem. You should remove the banks fuel module to determine it's not figuring into this any longer. If you determine the fuel system is OK then I would get it to Cummins for a diagnosis. Cummins West is in San Leandro off 880 at Marina West.

You may be in "Limp Mode". Do you have a check engine light on the dash? You could try to read the codes by cycling the ign switch to on and back off rapidly three times and then watch the odometer for code displays.

Fuel Injection Pump

After that happened I took all the wires off, took the Ottomind off and hooked the original wires back to where they were and it still did the same thing. My check engine light is on.
