Guys I am stumped in construction here. Is the Top 3" connection an auxiluray connection for say a power vent item? House was built in the 70's

It appears to be capped off with either a 3 or a w on it.

So you know: If that vent or any other flue gas vent is vented into a cement/morter chimney the exhaust gas will break down cement/morter and can eventually cause the chimney to collapse. If it is done properly a chimney liner kit needs to be installed so the vent pipe runs all the way to the top. If the vent pipe just goes thru/into the chimney then uses the regular chimney to vent it can lead to the above said problem.

O. K DT,

The one below is the exhaust for my furnace , Boiler , and Water heater. I can only assume that that vent goes straight to the top. Now the chances of that smaller empty connection above I guess is not connected to the sleeve?

It is connected and is there strictly for future addition. It was actually meant for the water heater but someone obvioulsly just combined them into one pipe for ease/cost effective connection. Ususally the larger is for the main heating appliance and the smaller for the water heating appliance, they are sized for the amount of btu's they can handle or the combined btu's the chimney itself was built to handle.

Very interesting, did not know that. Any further reading on that subject?

It would be in your best interest to check and see if the vent really does go to the top... Although if you go up on the roof to look down the chimney to see if the liner is there DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DO NOT LEAN AGAINST THE CHIMNEY WHEN LOOKING INSIDE ( in case it collapses you dont want to fall off the roof ) Its not likely to happen but it is possible
