A new belt was probably a good call. Does your tensioner feel stout? I don't think the water pump has any wear items, however, they do make two different styles. I have used both but I have no clue of any difference in performance. Do you know which one you have? My belt and tensioner are both new as is my water pump.

Don't remember which mine is, and I'm sad to report the belt didn't make a discernible difference. The tensioner is old. I took it off the last engine and this engine has 400k on it. It still requires a cheater bar to replace the belt though. The good news is the trailer is delivered and with luck it will be a long time until I hook to another.

However, I think I am going to like this new fan clutch. First impression is, the fan never goes silent like my old ones did. Even at high rpm, cool engine, it has a hum that is easily heard with the windows open. In town, low rpm cruising, it is medium loud at all times. It might be possible that a long shelf life, stiffened up the fluid coupling...but I hope not...I like it.

Well, I finally loosened up my clutch. It finally went silent after a 3k rpm, 1st gear down hill run today. I guess maybe I never had the rpm up enough to created enough resistance to break it loose. You wouldn't think it should take 5 weeks. It has been partially engaged this whole time, so now I have to start my testing all over again, lol.

Since my last post, I have used the truck lots of times and it is locked up again so I am keeping the rpm down under 2800 so it don't unlock. I am wondering if this clutch requires a medium duty sized fan, larger and more aggressive than my Dodge. I am okay with it locked up if it cures my overheating, and so far so good. Still haven't pulled a real long hill with a good load, so I still have that to do.

Got a good hot test yesterday. South of Payson has a 5 mile 6-7% grade, I think it's called the Rye Creek Hill. Empty truck and trailer, 80* out, I set the cruise at 67 mph, no AC and let it pull. At the very top it reached 226*, 30psi boost and 13-1350 EGT's.

Then leaving Phoenix with a small load, on the 60 freeway, I was set at 65 mph, 103* out, AC on, it snuck up to 210*. After I left the freeway, I dropped to 5th and 58 mph all the way to Globe, stayed around 200. On the grade out of Superior up through the tunnel 6-7% grade, speed set at 50 mph, it reached 213* I think I have the system at about as good as I can get, without spending more money. The ps cooler I added, might be adding a little heat now too.

I have pulled the 5 mile hill into Payson many times with the 10k 5ver. I always lock out overdrive and yes the engine would get toasty on my 24 valve. Never really saw any issue on 60 and have never pulled to Globe so no data there. Just to help give you some referances.

Thanks Dave, I was southbound, but yes, that hill is bad too. They all are, in and out of Phoenix from the rim country.

After having a year of intermittent cooling system issues mine finally showed me the problem. The plastic had finally split on one end tank, leaving a trail. I replaced the entire cooling system, radiator, pump, fan clutch, 180 t-stat, belt, tensioner......everything. Now, with a/c on, even pulling a load, it won't climb over 190. I'm thinking the fan clutch was weak for a while, and the leak kept it warm. I used a g-plus radiator if someone is wondering. I read this entire thread before I made any purchases. If only the transmission was so easily fixed.

Well the radiator has been working great, but with the harsh snow we had I think THE RADIATOR CRACK THE tank or weld, used the truck to get family members that were stuck ,worked the truck hard, so I flex the truck a lot . The leak is behind the fan shroud so I'm not totally sure where. Pulled the radiator today, will have it looked at when I get back, But right now I installed a OSC 1553 radiator for my trip.
