I have an 06 with the lower speed 6th gear. I am guessing it is going to need repair/replacing soon. (shifts real hard and is making noise in 1st 3rd and 5th gears. My question is if this thing is shot. (235000 miles) can I get a replacement with the higher 6th gear? and will it fit the 5. 9 with 4x4?
Where would you go to get one? Standard Transmission shows nothing about the G56 on their web site.

The two models of the G56 are the AD and AE. AD is what you have with the . 79OD, and AE has the . 74 OD. The cases are identical and you will have no issues bolting it right up in place.

a lot of the 06's got shipped a quart low on oil and it shortened the life of them another thing that happens is when the dual mass flywheel go's out it causes the front seal to leak. i have never seen or heard of the dual mass flywheel lasting more than 75,000 so i assume yours has been changed to a solid but if you did not change the front seal you will have that problem. the g56 needs to be filled one quart over full. the front bearing does not get enough cooling if you do not

Care to tell us how much $$$ for the trans?

First of all I am in Canada so pricing is totally different. Second my friend and I bought 2 of them ( AE version ) including stick, knob, shifter button, boot, and mount. Between the 2 of us we have 11 Chrysler products so we buy a lot of parts. I also buy parts for the company trucks through them. They give us a good deal on parts. :) We also bought 2 South Bend CON OFE and hyd kits for our trucks. His truck is a 93 W350. Shadrach

According to this poll 75K seems to be a common failure mileage, but there are many with more miles.

Stock G56 clutch life - Dodge Diesel - Diesel Truck Resource Forums

Dodge went DMF for a couple of reasons, one of which is the aluminum case cant handle the vibrations like a steel one can. It may not be an issue for most, but it can be.
DTR had a "ask the engineers" deal on here. The question was raised on the reason for the DMF. Their answer was to subdue noise and vibration. When asked if a single disk would "hurt" the G-56,they replied no. I've driven three NV5600's and each one would "talk" to me when I bogged it. I imagine my g-56 will do the same when the aftermarket clutch goes in.

I didn't read that post, good info. I don't have to worry about it, but dad has a G56 and want to give him the best advice when its change time.

Thanks guys for all the info. Now the trick is to be able to order a 08 g56 and turn in a 06 g56 for the core. Called one place and they said they would not be able to take the 06 for a core on an 08.

You might want to just rebuild yours with the higher ratio installed. It should be just the main shaft/input gear and matching countershaft gear. They might be bad anyway. Keep in mind, the change will change all your gear ratios except 5th.

Don't tell em its an 06, the cases are the same so if they don't know about the ratio change the won't care.

Do you have the part # For the 08 transmission

When ever I call a dealer they want my vin#

This will get me another 06

To be honest, running oversized tires and the constant camper load the . 79 overdrive is a good compromise for me. If I had stock tires though, the . 74 would be more desirable. After a manufacture date of 12-06,most 5. 9's came with the higher final drive. I'd think, even with your '06 vin# Dodge will supply the . 74 transmission.

Not sure where you go AE and AD

Every chrysler dealer I talk with gives me a part number of

RL104715AA This part number is the same for an 08 or my 06 using my VIN

so I'm not sure whats up

I sure wish I could get a part # from someone who ordered one. Hint, Shadrack

I have just always read about AD or AE ratios. It makes sense the part number works for both as I didn't think they made the AD ratio ones anymore.

From what I remember AD or AE is stamped somewhere on the trans.

Parts are expensive for the G56. Call Standard and discuss the options with them.

You aren't just a kiddin.

I did call Standard and Blumenthol

Basically the consensus is to order one from a wholesale dodge parts outlet

I found them to be 3260 plus shipping. They come with a 3 year 100000 mile war. No one else can come close to that.

The part number more than likely right as the late trans supersedes the early AD ratio trans.
I got lucky (only because of the guys on TDR telling me what production month to look for) and found my truck from dealer stock that was built in Dec. '06. It came with the AE ratio trans. They must have run out of the earlier ratioed G56's
