I'm thinkin agout swappin out my g56 for a 5600 before it breaks. I've put about 20 hooks on it. I pull in 2nd hi. This is the g56 in my 06 currently at 700hp. It's got 10k on it (300' at a time does't add up very quick). I seen and heard about alot of these breakin this past year sled pullin. It seams the input shaft bearing is not supported good enough in the case and it will wear the case and the other problem is there are no bearings in the center of the counter shaft just one in the front and one in back, so when you pull it pushes the shaft away until its riding on the edge of the teeth and evently it strips the teeth of whatever gear your pullin in. Seen this happen twice on a 900 hp truck this year. He had several pulls at the 700hp range. His second pull with 9 it sripped 2nd gear, put a brand new one in it and did it again on the first pull. I've talked to Blumenthals and they say there will never be a fix because you would have to design a different case to fix those 2 problems. They did say pullin 2nd hi is easier on it because it's a bigger gear closer to the bearing than 4th low, but pullin an the high side of the tranfer case is ALOT harder on the tranfer. I would rather break a transfer case than a trans. though. I'm curios to here anyone else's opinions or experiences. How many miles? How much hp? How many hooks? What gear were you pullin? What broke? I'm also wandering how they are holding up under normal abuse like hevy towing with mods or daily driving because I have one in my 97 tow rig. With what I'm seeing there may be alot of guys going back to the 5600.

I have compounded twins ( that's right. . four ) and have welded the head to the block and just yesterday launched in sixth with over 1300 h. p. to all four wheels. At the end of the Wal-Mart parking lot ( its about 1/4 mile long ) and a 9 second run, I put eyes on the trans. , looking for evidence of damage, and the little wren which has made its home on the x-fer case was still knitting booties for the chicks she'll have this spring. My G-56 was still cold to the touch.

w-t-f:-laf

Lets see now..... You take a transmission that is RATED for 325hp and 600torque, Maybe double the horsepower and torque, Do high torque load LAUNCHES in 4wheel drive, and call it JUNK when it fails!

Something's wrong here.

I think what kowaliga was saying was that his g56 has held up to that kind of abuse. I don't do boosted launches and drag race with mine it's strictly a sled puller and so far it has held but I've seen some break. Sled pulling is much harder on the trans. than drag racing because your basically trying to drag race being chained to upwards of 100,000# your just doing it in one gear. The boosted launch and the shifts is hard on the transmission racing but your still only moving the weight of the truck. The long strain of pulling a sled is where the g56 isn't holding up and the 5600 is doing fine.

My facetious post failed to get across what Motorhead's did. However, it is probably accurate to write that a G56 is junk when it fails.

How many transmissions won't fail when forced to perform at 400% designed load? The G56 is a nice transmission as long as you stay around the 600 hp mark. It shifts better than a NV5600 and is a lot easier to take out when clutch jobs come around. And Kowaliga, I bet changing valves is going to be fun on that welded head. You know they make head studs.

Its more fun to change them through the oil pan; I use tweezers with u-joints.
