After reading the article in the new TDR concerning the G-56,I spoke to one of the guys at ST. For my situation(constant 2000# camper load and warm climate) they do recommend the RP Synchromesh. I've used Amsoil Universal ATF for 24,000 now. I'll listen to some more feedback before I make a move if any. The Amsoil gave me marginal cold weather shifting performance.
I did the 30k oil change on my G56 and after calling Standard trans, I put the Amsoil Synchromesh (7qts) in mine. It made a BIG difference in shifting smoothness!
I have put about 750 miles on the new oil. The trans is quieter (I ditched the DMF and put in a CON-OFE) hot or cold. It takes less pressure to shift. It shifts much smoother when cold. My truck has 32,000 mi on it.
I sure wouldn't put something in that would harm my trans. I feel My oil switch was a good choice. The Amsoil Synchromesh oil is is a 5/30wt. I think that ATF is about a 5wt oil.
