comrades - anyone have any experience with luk clutches on 4th gens? i have one in my 01 5.9 and its great. currently have 2018 2500 56,000 miles - clutch slipping. im at wits end with this truck. 14 times to dealer. 3 clutch hydro assemblies and a new clutch at 6000 miles under warranty among other things. any opinions are welcome. truck is paid for. cheers, and thanks in advance for your input. the only shop i have ever taken any vehicle i have ever owned prefers luk, so thats why i am asking ( i know south bend is great... ) cheers and thank you ! :)

Are you planning on canning the DMF for a SMF? I thought the OE clutch was giving up the ghost on my vee dub at 200k but upon removal the clutch disc was only about half worn. The DMF spun causing the angry mannerisms I was experiencing....made for gaining access to the flywheel bolts very interesting to say the least.

Luk is a major OE supplier, I have no doubt they know how to make a good clutch. I don't know if there are better options for the money for your truck. Member GCroyle would be an excellent guy to ask.

jr - thanks for reply. yes, i am planning to junk the flywheel and replace to a smf... happy saturday sir!

SMF = single mass fly wheel. The 6.7 comes with a dual mass flywheel (DMF) to "improve" shift engagement but they have not historically done well behind the torque of a diesel and tend to slip or twist under load.

is it a safe assumption that on these trucks if i am getting intermittent clutch slippage it is probably due to the clutch or flywheel etc failing and not some kind of oil leak onto the clutch assembly? just throwing that out there. bone stock truck. thank you. cheers!

f y i - luk 05 185 "repset" solid flywheel conversion kit. stumbled across this on rock auto. it uses stock hydros, which for me is bad, because ive been through three of those, for some reason ( under warranty ). cheers !

The luk clutch kit should come with a new flywheel. Know that even the mild "stock" southbend clutches are pretty grabby and take some getting used to. Makes backing up a heavy trailer challenging but not impossible. Sorry for your trouble, I love my 2018 G56...

It is a shame that you are having this experience with a 2018 truck. The dual mass flywheel and the self adjusting pressure plate became the OEM choice since 2005.5. Two separate issues with these clutches and apparently 11 years later these issues have not been fixed. The two issues are:

* Dual mass flywheel begins to disintegrate internally (not your problem, yet). Symptoms are minor to major vibrations starting from medium to high mileage. These symptoms sneak up on you.

* Self adjusting pressure plate stops working properly (your problem). Symptoms are slipping clutch starting from low mileage.

A single mass flywheel and a non-self adjusting pressure will fix your issue. It is unfortunate that you must pay for this conversion because the OEM clutch is not up to the task for the long haul.

The SBC OKHD is silky smooth backing up into my cabover. I can't comment on backing a trailer up.

Very similar to my experience. Always smooth.

The OHD was so much smoother than the OFE in my 05 that I had planned to slightly detune my 05 to run a OHD when the OFE wore out.

This has been my experience as well. I've run one in my personal truck and sold several and NEVER had this complaint.

you wont be sorry with south bend, might talk with someone at south bend as you can before you order on line.

got truck back today. new south bend clutch is great. yes, slight noise difference vs stock. i could care less. the pedal feel is PERFECT. less than stock effort. and unlike pushing on a bucket of mush that the stock pedal feel was. the south bend hydro unit even impressed the shop guys. they liked the clutch overall too. the truck drives like it should now. thanks for all the advice. cheers all! :)
