Time to change the fluids

SRowle,

Do you have any additional information on the updated DM flywheel that the dealer installed in your truck? Do you have a part number or did they say what was different about the flywheel?

Thanks,

Robert

Yeah and I wonder if my new 2006 came with the updated version? Only 500mi. so far but everything works GREAT!

Also wondering about the fluid. Since I seem to have read about the possibility of extra bearing wear (more than normal?) and the G56 uses ATF+4 , does the ATF have less lubricating factor than the gear lube used before? And has anyone tried running a small amount of additive like Lucas or anything? I realize the transmission was designed for this fluid and adding something might not let the syncros or something else work properly and if I was going to try it, I would only try a SMALL amount. I am planning on putting a temp gauge on my transmission like the big rigs. I have a friend that pushes tractor trailer around the country and he said when they added Lucas to their trannies, the temps dropped noticably.

I notice when you shift from 4th to 5th most of the time a slight edge or catching a corner of a gear Like the synchos not quite right. Head tech at my dealership said probably that was the case and it might go away after more break in time. 10400 miles on odometer. purchased the vehicle 06 Mega SLT 3. 73, 4x4 Dec 1-05. Any of you have that issue w G56?

Yes... ... ... . but not every time. I figured it's probably me. If I think about my shift, it doesn't do it. And I only have @600 mi. on it. !NEW! :) So I have a lot of break in to do.

Even if I think about it it will do it most of the time, I have noticed if you wrap the rpm to 2500 or around that rpm it does not catch the edge as often, a further sign of syncho issue IMO

I've got a little over 15k miles on my '06 (long bed 4dr 4x4). I use the truck for work, and tow a 24' enclosed trailer daily. I bought the truck in late Nov. , '05 so I'm averaging 5k miles a month. The trailer weighs almost 5k lbs empty and can weigh as much as 10K lbs when fully loaded. I thought the transmission was very stiff at first, but after about 3k miles it smoothed out nicely. I accelerate quite heavily at times, keeping up with city traffic (Phoenix) and drive a mix of freeway and city streets. So far I've been happy with the G56, and the clutch seems to work fine also. I guess it shouldn't take too long to see how well it all holds up with the daily workout it gets.

On a side note, I've only towed once on the freeway for an extended time pulling the trailer loaded, and the truck sure has a lot of power. I drove up toward Flagstaff on the 17 which has a series of steep long pulls. Even driving into a stout head wind I was able to maintain 60 mph on the steep grades and never had to shift out of 6th gear.

No, there are others that don't like the "notchy" and stiff shifting of the NV5600 (the reason for the notable 5th gear miss)... and they are noisy... I don't mind the noise, but it could shift better... hey really SUCK when it is cold out until they warm up

I'm one of those 5th missed user, dealer gave a good bill of health. It's a lot better at 20000

Gear Vendor makes a great unit that bolts onto the back of the trans, it gives it another over drive gear. You can also split the gears.

But be careful, DC will void (or try to) your warranty if they find out you installed one of the units. IT will drop the RPM's about 500 RPM's when the unit is engaged.

Heres there phone number 800-999-9555, you can talk to Mike or Jordan. They are both good guys, or go to there web site www.gearvendors.com.

Hi David..... Have you got a GV unit on your truck?... ... How do you know that DC will try to void your warranty?... ... I have a GV unit on my 2005 3500 4x4 Dually with the G56... ... I had problems up front with the GV unit activating my electronic transfer case.

As to gear splitting the GV unit doesn't split gears on a G56... ... In fact the shifts from Direct Drive to Over Drive are nearly identical for all gears except 6th Over Drive.

If you can't or don't drive at least 70mph the GV unit on a Dodge with a G56 is worthless... ... You will not realize any benefit... ... If you go 70mph or faster consistently the GV unit will be a good investment in lowering RPM's and reducing engine noise.

I was worried up front that DC might try to void my warranty by adding the GV unit so I took the truck in prior to having it installed so I could go on record about 5th gear noise.

I need to change the fluid in my transmission... ... I have 7200 miles and it shifts really hard when cold..... Much better when warm, but not as good as when she was new.

I too, would like to know where the primary and secondary fill ports are on the G56. Where is its fluid level checked ? Does the shifter boot require removal to finish filling it? I've tried to e-mail MAGAL/EATON for this info, but no luck. Thanks for any info.

I have a letter sent to all dealers on checking G56 fluid level, I will look in truck for it but if I recall correctly it is checked by removing the bolt above the fill port which is 1 of 2 shafts (directly opposite each other)that hold reverse fork and is filled/checked through this hole not the original fill port. If I can't find it I'll get the dealer to send me another copy and let you know for sure.

I have 11K on mine and tow a 12K lb 38' trailer through the mountains of maine and love the transmission, no problems & shifts great.

Hi Geoffparker;

I have been working with DC because of my trans (NV5600) has four gears that are bad. This problem makes my truck sound like I'am running 40" mud tires as I run down the road. I had a gear vendor on my truck with about 400 miles on the GV. I took it off before I took the truck in for service. DC knows that I had a GV on the truck and they tried to blame the GV for the problems in the trans. Believe me it's been a long haul, but DC has come thru and said that they where going to replace the trans, we're just waiting for the new trans to show up for the R&R to be done.

If you really read your warranty, it states that if any, and I mean any after market products or any modifications are performed on the truck period, this is enough to void the warranty. I had this explained to me by three different service managers at three different dealers. Also when I talked to there corp offices back in Michigan, they read me the riot act, and the contract back to me that I signed. But I contacted a lawyer, and he told me no matter what they have in there contract they still have to prove that any installed after market products installed on your truck or mine, is what caused the problems. They have to prove it.

So I'am waiting for the transmission. I just want my truck back.

Remember support or troops.

David
