Does anyone besides me think the placement of reverse next to second gear was a bonehead idea... ?

I knew it was coming. I was stopped at a signal waiting for the go color when I guess I was pre-occupied and pushed the lever past the stop into reverse thinking it was second. When the light changed was I surprised. Good thing the car behind me wasn't looking up at my spare as most drivers pull up so close. I was only slightly embarassed and knew it was only a matter of time before I did this. I have done this before but realized it before I actually took off.

I think the placement of reverse on the NV 5600 is a much better location than this.

Just wondering if anyone else has done this. And also wonder if placement of reverse in this position was a design necessity or someone actually thought this was a good idea when it could have been placed on the right side, either up or down... ?

I went from a NV5600 to the G56 and it doesn't bother me. The only downside right now is just not putting it in 5th when I want to back up... :)

All change requires a period of adjustment.

I have done the same thing not once but twice actually. Very embarrassing and also somewhat dangerous as well. I was thinking of installing a LED on the dash tied to the reverse switch as a safety, but then I decided to get rid of the truck for an '01 with the NV5600. I have to say I like it much better.

It should up by 1st. I didn't like the NV5600 arrangement either. I found when running through the gears hard it was easy to go into reverse instead of 5th.

I thought that was 7th gear, and that the noise was because the synchro was going bad. :-laf

think of the guy behind you. He's thinking:

"oh crap this idot in the big a** truck in front of me has it in reverse and I'm going to be kissing his bumper if he guns it off this light and I can't move beause I cant even see the hood of the a**hole behind me" :)

Sorry, Tron I'm with Blacksheep

Tron,

When I went from an '03 to an '04 I purposely went with an auto because I HATED where "R" is on the on the 5600! Sorry, Tron (for those of you who like to attack REMEMBER this is just MY opinion) every time I was on it going through the gears I threw it in "R" trying to get into 5th. I think the "R" placement on the G56 is great and if they offered the G56 when I purchased I would still be a manual guy. So please, don't tell me the G56 was offered on the '04. 5 because I'd really feel like an idiot. I could never speed shift my 5600.

4 years and 85k miles on my 02/nv5600 and never once have I almost hit reverse while going into 5th. however I have hit 5th many times while trying to put it in reverse, no biggie though.

You all know that regardless of where they put the gears, someone isn't going to like it. There are people on here that complain that the 4wd shifter isn't tall enough! :--) You just can't please everybody.

Reverse should be right and down in a pickup, left and up in a truck. I'll still take left and down over right and up.

On my G56 you really have to bump it over to get it into reverse (safety feature I guess). I will say, when I picked-up my truck at the dealer, I tried taking off in 4th (thinking 2nd) and killed it. Not only did I do that once, but twice in a row  ! Boy I felt like a horses butt! I really like the reverse placemen, it makes it nice for parking and backing a trailer. JMHO.

Have a good one!

Nick

They could do a shifter like in the VW's where you have to push down on the shifter to open the gate to reverse. That's a good safety but I'll be damned if it isn't near impossible to figure out on your own! :-laf

Edit: CContreras, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that(at 75 though). Heck, I can't tell you how many times I've tried to go for a 7th gear! My wife did it also last week when we took a trip to Atlanta!

I have had mine in reverse or 4th instead of 2nd at times when I am not paying attention. But I like the placement of reverse on the G56 my 78 land cruiser has it in the same place but it does not have the gate to push through.
