Guess im going to build some gates, will have to be a slide not a swing Cause of snow. Was wondering about Chain drive or Gear drive. Most that I have seen and been around at work IN CALIF where its warm are chain. I was wondering how chain would hold up with the bad cold we have here, the Gear drive could be covered to prevent contamination and it don't stretch like chain does. Just thinking

I have seen a few that look like a conventional gate but swing up kinda like a RR crossing arm. I would think that would be good for snow though no personal experiance and I dont know how hard they would be to open without power

Have a bunch of big heavy chain drive gates at work and they are pretty stout. They get cycled opened and closed several times an hour 24/7 and rarely ever have any issues. Keep the chain oiled every now and then, if you ever have to adjust them it's quick and easy to do so and the motor is sealed and all controls are in a sealed box. Our plant is within a mile of Lake Erie and we get quite a bit of lake effect throughout the winter, temps nowhere near as cold as you but does get below zero occassionally and in 15 years of coming in and out of here I've never seen any snow or freeze related issues.

Get a commercial operator like an Elite or similar.

Can't speak on a small gate, every aircraft hanger door that is chain driven I have seen have been nothing but trouble. I know I'm talking about a larger, heavier door but they have bigger, heavier chains and motors.

Brother BIG!
Are ya gonna have a maintenance and weather protection shed for the gate and drive mechanism, off to the side where it "goes home" when the gate is open?

Most so far that ive seen have a motor that isnt protected from the elements, but I was thinking of the addition of more, at least over the top and 3 sides, im sure that it will be another thing that needs snow dug out from around it. The railroad crossing gate I don't think would work we have semi trucks come in the gate and past the T in the drive and they go to the back to load cattle. So figure at LEAST 15' ft high and 15' wide that gate would REALLY HAVE TO RAISE STRAIGHT UP!

dodgesst

I think we are talking about 2 different kinds of chain, the gate chain looks like Motorcycle chain they just seem to stretch and clang around keeping them clean to prevent a jam is pretty hard to do.

The gear drive would be easy to attach a shield over it to keep out debris and snow off ( IF THAT'S POSSIBLE )

I haven't even gave thought of a Home Chepo or Lowes purchase. Commercial would be the only thing to go for.

If you are wanting to just keep the rectum holes out for camping, just have any gate and keep it open in the winter. RVers don't usually travel in the snow. You could also mount a cannon somewhere (not your 44-40). I have a gate, keeps the riff-raft and 7th day freeks out, but it's necessary.

Blu we have a lot of snow people up here, some are much worse than the happy campers.

I was talking about a gate like this, only thing I dont know is how they open without power if you ran into that situation

Will have to look into that, it shows a 24v operation which is a must I have no power out at the gate. Thanks that would solve the slide problem, Im sure that there is a counter weight on that to help lift it power or not

Big just an idea here. I think you are on the right track on the gear drive gates for your area. What about making its attachment points to the gate poles like a floating dock. So as the snow gets deeper it moves up the poles. Put skies on the wheels in the winter like bush planes use and maybe you wouldn't have to dig the snow out.

Had Breakfast today with a buddy that works for the US Dept of Forestry, I had some napkin sketches and thoughts from my regular breakfast Pards at the cafe. Was asked if I was wanting to keep people out? or keep people out and possessions in?

If anyone really wanted to they could take things out of the place by taking down the fence with a chain and truck, im just looking at keeping unwanted people from driving down the driveway. He suggested the way that the Forestry Dept does it, they even have some with automatic gate openers if that's what is needed for ease of entry without getting out of the truck to open the gate. Like our access roads to the fire watch towers and the weather station.

Two poles one each side of the driveway and a hinged swing gate that is long enough to span the driveway. Nothing to worry about with plowing the snow other than the poles on the side of the drive. He suggested to make them high enough so Penny can see them and don't wipe them out with the tractor when she is plowing the drive while we are having our coffee and sweet rolls in the driveway warming hut. :-laf

Penny didn't see the humor in that and gave him a punch in the arm :-laf

The pole on the side opposite the hinge side has a Pin Lock that is automatic on some of their gates and even then when they want to keep someone out FOR-SURE They rap it and chain and lock with an alloy chain that would take one hell of a set to bolt cutters or a touch to cut thru, Bottom line is if they want in bad enough THEY ARE GOING TO GET IN!!! He said that its a pretty tuff gate they have pulled up to the gates and found many a truck bumper or trailer hitch laying on the road with a chain still attached to the gate and the bumper/ or hitch :-laf

There are many good gate access openers that are Smart Phone connected, rather than the old garage door openers that's really not hard to break into and find the code that is used to open the auto gate

I asked if he knew where I could find a STOP sign and the Caution Signs, he suggested a late night run to Condon MT they have some new ones that were just put up, they need a 9/16 box end wrench or a small pneumatic ratchet and air tank with a small stepladder for added convince, Tom our Sheriff said that his ears are plugged up with his cold and didn't hear that :D
