Gauges & Mounting Options

Here's the setup in my truck. All isspro, been there since '98 or so. The boost gauge stinks (30#) the needle sticks @0 often and has been warranteed twice. I have learned to live with it. I don't think the Banks pod is available any more.

The pod may not be available from Banks, but you can get the 4-holer from U. S. Gear.



I really like the steering column pod. I wonder if heating the back portion of the gauge pod and forming a deeper pocket would give enough room... .

I used to work in a plastics factory. This pod is made from polypropline plastic. It is very easy to work with. It has low melting point. It forms easy over a mold or form. But in this app it is very thin in the place you are talking about heating and stretching. It will most likely break out and make a good size hole. Or it will go paper thin and you would be able to see threw it.



I thought about digging out my heat gun and doing the same thing. After looking the spot over. I decided against it.

Sorry to shoot down the ideas Dan. But I am doing the hard part for everyone. I spent the money. Right now everyone else gets the free ride. I'll work the bugs out.





I'll post back when I get a responce from Auto Meter on the 2697 tach. If it fits the pod I'll most likely go with it. It can be adjusted for 4-6-8 cylinder engines. Nascar Mark posted a long time ago that a regular tach would work on our tach signal. If I get time tomorrow I have a new Sun Super tach out in the garage I am going to use as a test mule to find out.

Thanks Philip. That is exactly what I was looking for... the little gremlins that take up time and money. I'll hold off a week or so. Please post the results of your inquiry w/ Autometer. I love that steering column pod, and I'm 6'2" and with my aftermarket seats, I'd likely be able to see all of the speedo with it there. Thanks for covering the guinea pig slot on this journey.

I have all autometer stuff, 2 5/8 mounted on the piller. The Autometer diesel tach I have goes up to like 7,000 I think. That plenty for me. Also I noticed autometer has a listing for a pod for our trucks in 2 1/16 size. I like to see mine well so I got the larger ones everything turned out great.

I just put in the ISSPRO tach today. Wanted the steering column mount, but couldn't find one for the 1st gen. So I got the bullet cup holder from PDR. Mounted it next to the A pillar and the other 2 gauges. I think it looks great, and doesn't block the view of anything else. I'll go get a pic and post it. Having a tach rocks!!

One other idea Philip: What about a decorative ring to fill in the gap from the back edge of the gauge to the front edge of the Pod? I'm thinking some black ABS pipe nicely trimmed and painted, or some polished stainless or ??? Not sure exactly what to use, or how it would look, but its another idea.

I got an email back from Auto meter today. The 2697 tach will fit into their pod with some triming of the studs. They are asking how many signals the Dodge generates per revolution of the engine. I'll find that out in a little while and send a return email to them.

I have the return email on the way to Auto Meter. Our engines produce two signals per revolution if that helps anyone out.



Remember Lock93. If you want to run a light in the gage it will be out another 1/2" from the pic I posted. That was without the light installed.

I got the reply back today from Auto Meter.



They said with two signals per revolution if they were square wave signals. It should work with the tach set on the 4 cyclinder setting and it should be accurate.



They (Auto Meter) also wanted to know the results if it worked.



So off to order I go.

Phil hope you have your guages installed but if not my expierence may be of help to you. first i ran into the same problem useing the autometer cup so back it went and i ordered a isspro cup from DIS out of texas with all the guages isspro. I tried Genos first but they had to back order some and the delivery date was wks. I mounted the cup on the column and reinforced the plastic cover from underneath with a piece of aluminum and used ss screws and #10 bolts and hardware for mounting. i like the location ok however a dash mount would have worked also I just couldn,t find a four guage pod at the time. The trans temp is an oil guage . I placed the sender in the trans port and did the (T) fitting hookup but i also used a 45deg extension to drop the sender, t , and original sender unit down and away from the trans and lines so i could tighten all the added parts without bottoming out against the transmission. its still a tight fit and takes some manipulating. to get it tight. I also removed a small 1/4 inch bolt on the frame for a good ground and made a ring to fit around the temp sender for a second ground point to the frame. samsram has posted some very good pictures but i discovered that there are sevral differences in install procedures of isspro vs autometer. The isspro column tach mt must be removed to do any work if the dash must be pulled away so install it last and make sure everything works . I,m thinking of installing a cd and if i do off comes the tach . ain,t it fun K. E.

I wanted to stay away from cup style mounts. I like the look of the pod mount for the 94 and up series. If I can't use this type of mount I'll just do without a tach. I think the cups are tacky. Plus I won't drill holes in a uncracked dashboard or steering column covers



My other gages are in the A pillar.

I have the 2697 AutoMeter tach on order. It should be in around Wed or so. I'll post back to this thread when it comes in and I get to hook it up.

I got the 2697 tach in today. I hooked it up and it didn't work. Looks like the Dodge signal is not square wave. I am sending another email back to AutoMeter.



I cut the light socket off of my Isspro tach. It will not go in flush with the face of pod even with it removed. It still hang out around 1/4".

The Dodge signal is 2 pulse/revolution. It is a pulse, not a square wave. I just read this post or else I could have helped out there. Sorry.

Any further updates on being about to use the Autometer #2697 low-rev tach with signal from our 1st gen under dash plug? Phil I think you were looking for a way to convert the pulse wave into a square wave so the tach would read? I'm really wanting to use an 2-1/16" tach on the steering column 2nd gen pod and I definitely want to keep my 6 gauges all Autometer.



According to the Autometer installation instructions for the 2697 the thing can be calibrated in 3 modes: 4 cyl/2pulse, 6 cyl/3 pulse, and 8 cyl/4 pulse. I have no idea what that means but there has to be a way to 'plug' this tach into the under dash plug. And to clarify, there's a plastic plug under my dash that has 4 wires going in with two male spade terminals. It has two white wires w/ purple stripe and two purple wires with white stripe, or something like that - it's early and I've only had one cup o' java. Is this the 'one' for a 'tach'?



As well, does the Autometer 2697 tach come with the little green and red plastic bulb sleeve to change the backlight color?



There's a way to do this fellas..... I can feel it... .
