I had the same thing happen to me after a driving wind and snow storm. The light stayed on for a day or two and then finally went out. The whole time I never lost the charge rate. ???

Same here, driving in a downpour for a few hrs, light came on,and went off a few days later. Never seemed to affect charge rate. Alt lasted a year after that. Maybe it got wet,try drying it out.

I kept having it come on too. Noone could tell me what it was and neither does the manual. Eventually I had to replace the alternator. The light started happening months before on and off.

Must be some kind of bug going around, mine did the same thing about a week ago. Still haven't figured it out !

Stick

Mine comes on every once in a while, usually from snow or rain. I just wiggle the wires on the alternator, and it starts charging again and thew light goes out.

you might what to keep this in mind

I had the same problem with my 97, so I went to the stealer to have them test the charging system. they told me it was the alternator. So I bought one a reman. put it on, guess what that was not it . after paying $284 for that.

So i go back to the stealer, and told them they where wrong, and test it again. Now it is the PCM, because the voltage regulator is in the PCM. that was a real smart move by D/C because it was

$528 from the stealer . but now it is fixed for now.

You may be right on the PCM being the problem. I replaced my alt with a Leece-Neville unit because it was close to $500. 00 CDN for a new alt from the dealer. I bypassed the PCM,it now has no control over the alt (the way it should be :) ),and my problem was gone. Maybe it was the PCM after all.

The Leece-Neville unit is not a direct bolt on. It takes a bit of work to do,but is way cheaper, and a way better alt setup.

Here is a link to the previous thread I posted with part numbers, pics and other info.

I was just wanting to bypass my pcm, do you have any wiring diagrams on this setup? If so I would like to see how it was done, so that I can do it correcly. Any help on this matter will greatly be appericated.

Our trucks have an external voltage reg. mounted to the back of the alt.

Below is the technical info as provided by Nippondenso.

ER/IF Alternator for Nippondenso

120 Amp, 12 Volt, CW Rotation

Reg. Type: ER (External Regulator)

Fan Type: IF (Internal Fan)

Pulley Type: 8S

Mtg. Ear Clocking: 12:00

Mtg. Ear Hole Size: 11MM

Contact me off the list for pricing for new ND products should you have need for them.

The dealerships sell many PCM's when a new alternator often solves the problem and the customer has shelled out some serious clams. :(

Some late models use Bosch. . I think they are interchangable?

Good luck, Andy
