I have read about how great the DTT transmission upgrades are and how happy all of Bills customers are with his transmission modifications and his excellant customer service. I have even heard this from a transmission consultant that is independent of this Turbo diesel forum. I guess from what I have heard and read that Bill is the man when it comes to transmissions :) . I know I could call Bill and ask him these questions but I don't want to waste his time while I am still not quite ready to commit. ( My drivetrain is still under factory warranty and is stock, plus I am still saving my $$$ ) I'm the type of guy that even if someone else comes out with a better mouse trap before I make my final buying commitment I will go with the guy that has the long term track record (guess I am old fashion). I'm just trying to get a feel for the costs involved in this upgrade. My truck is and will alway be a daily driver (highway Queen :) ). I now have 40K miles on it and the transmission is well maintained (no problems so far). I am not looking to drag race my truck or use it to haul or tow anything even near the factory ratings. I just want it to be the best it can be with the stock engine 215hp 420 torque. I am looking for long term dependablity 300K plus miles. What would be your recommendations for my truck (89%, 91% etc. ) and what is the cost (ball park) that I need to put away for this upgrade? I live in the Springfield Missouri area so I can't take it to Canada for Bill to do the upgrade, so who would be closest to me that Bill has trained and certified to do this type of upgrade? I know, I know, call "Bill", but at this point I don't want to waste his time. I am just looking for group input and Ball park costs? Thanks in advance for your responses. Sorry for the long post but I felt that to get good feedback you needed all of the facts. Please don't Flame me because I love my truck in stock form and my truck is a highway Queen. :D

Sent you a PM........

I don't know if prices should be discussed openly here. But save your pennies. The DTT upgrades are the best mods I made to my truck. Well maybe the EZ. Everything else is just icing on an already tasty cake.

A friend here in Georgia had the DTT installed in his truck by a local shop for total cost of $1400. 00. He had to work with Bill for all the little "shift point" adjustments. Now I drive a 5 speed but that transmission got me thinking what if. It is very strong shifting gear to gear with a 91%. If it could stand up to my tow habits I might do it. I really like my 5 speed though. Shift when I want to.

I have bought a few things from Bill and can say, like Piers,he will take all the time it takes for you to understand. Really good people.

Big toy, once you find a shop capable of doing the job correctly, you should plan on paying for 8-10 hrs labor,it took me 7-8,but fine tuning it takes time too,if needed. If i would you, definetely go with the 89%,you might want to add an EZ edge,to help get your out of the hole performance back up to stock.

Each transmission is different. Most will need an update kit. Don't forget to do the Mag-Hytec Pan while you are at it. I have about $2300+-, incl labor in mine (TC/VB/Pan/Update kit/Temp port trans line & fluid). See sig Watch wwcd2.com for some promo deals

Thanks guys for the information. I now feel kinda stupid. I bought this truck used with 35K miles on it and paid $1,800 for the extended 100K diesel wrap warranty (because it had a automatic) Looks like I could of just used that $1,800 and another $700 and not had to worry about the transmission. Oh well live and learn. I will get this upgrade when my warranty is up. Thanks again for the info.

Cullyguy, I see you have a temp port trans line. Was it the same diameter as the stock lines? The one I bought for my 99 was a lot smaller than my stock ones so I didn't use it. Just wandering if the 99's and 2001's had different lines on them?

If I wasn't going to be towing any heavy loads I would just keep the transmission stock and save the money. Myself, I tow and haul heavy so I needed the upgrade. It was well worth the extra expense for my purpose. Just my two cents

BMC96,

I believe it's the 95 line you want. Be sure to remove the check valve in the line as the heat exchanger already has a check valve, if you leave two in the line there is too much restriction and poor fluid flow which could result in transmission problems from over heating.

I agree with dewdo,

if your not towing heavy or raiseing alot of hell, I would keep it stock. If you are abuseing the transmission then maybe you could cancel your warranty and get that transmission upgrade. Use a little of everyones advise, Ultamately you have to live with your decision so research and choose wisely.

Why bother?

I guess I'm sitting here wondering what you feel will be gained through all of this? Considering the money... and all.

Only reason I did it. . is that I knew I would eventually have too. .

Due to big injectors and a PE Comp. Not to mention I use my truck like a truck...

So my needs and uses are quite different from yours.

If I was in your shoes. I'd wait till I had a problem before spending that kind of money.

Nothing wrong with a stock truck... All the more reason to leave things alone at this point.

But if you must, IMO, get a 91% plus Bill's valve body. Don't just do the TC by itself.

BMC96, I got the Trans line from Bill K, when they did my install work. I did not pay much attention to the size. I only know that if Bill K's shop did it, it was done correct:D

Big toy, onthe warranty, you should be able to sell back the warranty,i wouldnt expect a refund, but they will prorate it,depending on how long its been in effect, and any claims you may have against it. Thye do this all the time on trade-ins or when a car is stolen,or wrecked. I bet you will get around 12-1500 back if you terminate it,and havent used much of the time on it.

Thanks for your thoughts. I agree that since I will keep it stock and have the 100K mile warranty, I might as well keep the transmission stock and service it. Then based on the price from Bill on a new transmission swap if I have any problems after 100K I can just buy one of his setups and sell mine back as core return. Looks like that would cost me around $2,500 plus the install. Looks like the best way to go. That gives me 3 years based on my annual mileage est. to get the Bombing bug, and save my money for the upgrade. It's great to have you guys to bounce this stuff off of. When I talk to my wife about this stuff she just gets this blank stare :D

Big Toy

I was quoted a price for around $2500. 00 for the Converter, V/B and transmission up grade which includes 5 disk main clutch pack, 2nd gear band and oiling mods. The guy that does this around here lives in D/FW area and does it on the weekend. PM me if you need any more info.

Jim

P. S. I rode in his truck and was hooked, now I scraping money up.

"When I talk to my wife about this stuff she just gets this blank stare" Wow, Big Toy, you tell your wife about your bombing plans? I would never do that as she figures she gets to spend as many dollars on silly house stuff as I spend bombing.

I already lost that battle :) Just to get the truck!!! She redecorated the house. Lets see new carpet, Tile in all of the bathrooms, repaint all of the woodwork and all of the walls and then some new wallpaper. Plus a couple of new chairs. See I am out numbered, my sister is a designer and is "HELPING" my wife. I knew I should of been nicer to my sister when I was growing up :) Hell, for what I spent on the house I could have gotten 3 or 4 new DTT transmissions, a new turbo and EZ and still had money left over. Like they say Marriage is about compromise. I got the truck and see got the house redecorated. Don't get me wrong I am still happy with the outcome, I did get my truck :D By the way my wife was a Bank Examiner for the FDIC and she takes care of all of the finances. It is impossible to get anything by her. Plus she is good looking and treats me like a King, so I am happy. Now if I could only get her interested in trucks (fat chance) plus if she was interested in trucks she would then want to drive mine and that is not what I would really want. I guess I should change my handle to P*ssy whipped :D :D :D

diesel wrap ???

if i remember reading on this site correctly , the diesel wrap has a clause that if you don't use it , you get a total refund minus 50 bucks for a processing fee ????

Let her drive.....

Big toy, if you let her drive and she gets to feel the power of the mighty Cummins, she might start to enjoy driving. My wife enjoys driving my truck so much she can't wait to see the '03s. I think I'm in trouble :D  :D. Ok lets get out the calculator, this month's budget... ... .
