Picked my truck up from the dealer today. I took it in to have the oilpan gasket checked for leaks and have them check my inj. pump out. Its had a deadspot in the powercurve from about 1800-2100rpm's and at cruising speeds, even with the cruise control set, it had a surge to it. I could hear it, but couldn't feel it or see the tack jump around at all. So I changed the fuel filter before I took it in (old one actually didn't look to bad) so they couldn't tell me they replaced that and it seemed to fix it. Anyways, they tell me they checked it for codes and found a code for the lift pump that occured 65-70 starts ago. Is there even a code for the lift pump? Ofcourse the service manager couldn't even give me an actual number for the code. Then he tells me, since I had a full tank in it, they couldn't do a volume test on the lift pump cause that would cause inacurate readings! He told me to try again when I had like a 1/4 tank in it. Now how the hell does that make a difference? And get this, I asked him to look up whether the truck has ever had a lift pump or injection pump replaced under warranty ( I just bought it the end of January) and he says it actually shows that its never had any warranty work done! Its an 02 and has almost 78,000miles on it! And its never had either pump replaced! I couldn't believe that. So, I figure the inj. pump will probably wait to go out till after my warranty expires in July.

A glimmer of hope on the warranty: Read the warranty manual very carefully on when that engine warranty begins.

Dont know about your '02 (dont know why it would be different), but my 98 book and the one in our 05 van agree with each other. The 5yr/100,000 mile engine warranty begins at the end of the standard 3/36,000.

Pretty shure injection pump is covered under that (mine was), but I dont know if the lift pump is... ...

Not much help for now, but the few extra years of warranty might give some peace of mind. Unless, of course, "you are your own warranty station" :-laf

You better read that again. DC is not giving 8 year engine warranties! It takes over after the 3y/30k, but runs concurently, so it actually only gives you two more years.

I have read it real carefully. I have yet to have anyone show me where in the model years 1998-2002 Warranty Information Booklets it says they run concurrently. The wording in the booklets, along with federal law, make it real clear that they run consecutively.

My VP44 was replaced by DaimlerChrysler, under the Cummins Diesel Engine Limited Warranty at six years, ten months, twenty-one days/130,737 miles on my 2000 Ram 2500.

A careful read, including links, may convince you: https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=171690

Understanding the warranty is fairly simple. Getting DaimlerChrysler to honor it is the difficult part.

And DC's current stand on the Cummins Engine Warranty is to stonewall you. If you ask them to show in the Warranty Information Booket where it says the Cummins engine warranty begins at delivery, they will not, but continue to deny warranty. My next step in this battle is a complaint to the WA State Athorney General.

Seems that someone should start a class action suit on this issue. SNOKING

a suit would for us bombers be a moot point ,though for bus companies and the like a great idea i think we should be involved as the outcome (vp44 revision/upgrade) would certainly benefit bombers.

The link in my first reply has a link (near the end) to warranty booklets for model year 1997-2007 Rams. The "booklets" are .pdf's & are complete, except for covers.

You couldn't believe with 78K miles that the truck had never had warranty work? My truck has never had warranty work. The original lift pump failed well past 100,000 miles. Now, at 119,250 I just replaced the rear wheel axle seals. That is just the second repair ever. Everything is working perfectly.

I couldn't believe it cause the general concensous here is that the 02's seem to have a high VP44 failure rate. That, and when I bought it, I basically had to rebuild the whole front end, and it did have a 5th wheel hitch mounted in the bed at one time, so I know the thing got used hard. The only thing that led me to believe that the previous owners took descent care of it was that the top end look very clean, so they must have changed oil pretty regularly
