Hi all,

I got a funny question for everyone. I just changed the oil in the Getrag today and the oil was really black. Virgin oil I assume, don't know for sure since I bought the truck used. But the old oil had a tiny amount of brass flakes in it, about as much to fit on the head of a Q-Tip. Would this be from the syncros breaking in when the transmission was new? I can't see any steel flakes and I'll take a magnet to the old oil to make sure. The truck has 130,000 miles on it, engine slightly bombed as of last week at 23 PSI max. The transmission only growled during low speed lugging in fourth and that stopped when I replaced the oil with Valvoline 5W-40 Synthetic with a generous amount of ER (Energy Release antifriction additive), 1/2 quart overfilled with the truck on a sidehill. Anyone got any hints to the brass? If the Getrag is Getrashing, what does it take to replace it with a NV4500 or 5600?

I wouldn't worry about the brass, from what I have learned hear is that is normal wear from the synchros. My trany growls in 4th to when I lug it so I dont lug it in 4th. I also understand that the getrag needs the type of oil that the owners manual states, not the next step up or the newer mix because it isn't always better. Maybe some of the other guys can shed some more light on that subject. As for the brass I wouldn't worry.

Avoid any transmission lube that contains "EP" - extreme pressure additives - they are corrosive/eat brass... Other than that, a small amount of SMALL brass residue is pretty common in normal transmission wear...

I put Red Line MTL lube in my 93, seems to shift better.

Red Line reccomends MTL over motor oil because it doesn't break down as fast.

Hey Mgrant!

Yes! A small amount of brass "fines" are normal in the Getrag. You can reduce the amount of fines in suspension by installing a Fuller Manual Transmission Filter (rightside) from Geno's. They're cheap and also increase oil capacity by about 1/2 quart.

PS: Even a new NVG4500HD will growl in 4th! Cummins Torque Brother!:):D:)
