Hi all,
I got a funny question for everyone. I just changed the oil in the Getrag today and the oil was really black. Virgin oil I assume, don't know for sure since I bought the truck used. But the old oil had a tiny amount of brass flakes in it, about as much to fit on the head of a Q-Tip. Would this be from the syncros breaking in when the transmission was new? I can't see any steel flakes and I'll take a magnet to the old oil to make sure. The truck has 130,000 miles on it, engine slightly bombed as of last week at 23 PSI max. The transmission only growled during low speed lugging in fourth and that stopped when I replaced the oil with Valvoline 5W-40 Synthetic with a generous amount of ER (Energy Release antifriction additive), 1/2 quart overfilled with the truck on a sidehill. Anyone got any hints to the brass? If the Getrag is Getrashing, what does it take to replace it with a NV4500 or 5600?
Mike
