First, Is there a good gearbox shop in MD/PA for the getrag?

Here is what I've got. Top cover off, oil is alumium/silver colored. Front shifting fork(2&3gear) I. D is greater than the O. D. of the collar. The trans would intermitantly shift into one not the other.

It all started back when the rear cover was replaced after a u-joint failure. The old flying driveshaft smashed the crap out of everything:eek: . The rear seal was replaced, with the rear cover but leaked (flowed), the trans ran low on oil before I made the repair. The new seal is leaking a little. The seal surface on the yolk is good. I wonder about a bearing going bad.

The question is did the lack of oil destroy the fork? Can the fork be replaced with out any other work? The trans shifts well by hand, w/o shifter. The cones move axely but not up and down on the shaft. No metal slivers in oil.

Are there books for the getrag360? Other than a press is there any special tools needed?

I am a diesel engine tech not a gearbox guy.

Thank you for the help.

Lack of oil will wreak lots of havoc inside the Getrag- it could well have led to the demise of the shift fork.

Silver/ aluminum in the oil makse me think the shift fork may ahve worn out, or possibly synchros, but they tend to be copper/ brass colored.

What rear cover was replaced? If it was the one on the transmission, it needed to be reshimmed at that time. If you didnt, you likely have too much or not enough play in the gear shafts. Too tight, and the bearings will wear prematurely.

The 1993 FSm has a rebuild section for the Getrag. Book calls for . 006-. 008" preload for new bearings; 0 preload for used. I prefer to err on the loose side if I am unsure. They will live a lot longer a hair loose than if they are ANY too tight.

Between MMiller, 1stGen4evr, mysteryman, and a few others, you can get any question about the Getrag you want answered.

Do a search under each of our names and you will get pretty much all there is on the Getrag. In case you are not aware, Mysteryman was an engineer with Dodge during the roll out of the first gens. He had some comments not too long ago regarding the yokes. His comments have been most enlightning to me even though I solved most of my troubles cold turkey from a life time of mechanical repairs.

And only nine posts, hey jump on in with us.
