The shifter stub is heat treated. If you heat it ... it you will destroy the hardness of the steel... ... This could cause problems down the road

I doubt I'll ever row the gears hard enough to break that stub, it's beefy. I didn't want to bend the lever because it's tubular and I like the lever straight. We have a truck at work where they bent the lever, and I don't like the way it shifts, feels clumsy.

i must be misunderstanding this, my shifter stub (sticking through the floor) is just a 1/2" square dowel about 2" long. my shifter handle is just a square hole that slides over the dowel with some rubber in it to fill the gap. no bolts there to tighten. lots of slop in it. i know what it is because i have a long handled pistol grip that i've been trying to figure out how to attach. pistol grip was already ruined(heated and bent to put in an el-camino--gotta wonder bout them bowtie boys) so i thought it would be kinda cool in the truck
