There has been speculation that GM might be interested in buying Chrysler to take advantage of the car company's coffers. As of June 30, Chrysler had $11. 7 billion in cash.

If that's the case, Bragman said, it could spell the end of Chrysler. "If the main motivator for GM is really to get after that money, that means they're going to have shut everything else down because Chrysler itself has financial obligations and financial needs that that money is funding," he said. D'Aveni and Bragman agree that, overall, the problems suffered by each automaker won't be resolved through a merger of the two.

Bragman said that while GM would stand to gain market share by merging with Chrysler, the new combined company would also lose money because it would have similar models, like the Dodge Ram and the Chevy Silverado, competing against each other for buyers. D'Aveni said that the historical strife between the two companies also doesn't help the prospects for a successful combination. "You've got to manage the culture of two enemies that have hated each other for decades," he said.

I just heard in the news that the deal between GM and Chrysler is getting closer. Hmmm, my next truck could be a GMDodge with a CUMMAX diesel engine.
 
gm's shutting down plants and getting forced to shut even more down, its not gonna happen, I don't think the government could let it happen, just think of all the people that wouldn't have jobs, gm just wants jeep so they actually have something that is worth a ****.

Seriously... Same team, different days. And by same team I mean USA. If this becomes a "what service is better" tangent, then we should move it to the competition or guns forum.

What I was really interested in was what people thought about a possible merger between GM and Chrysler. For example... would two truck product lines continue? Would GM just strip Chrysler's assets and leave us all hanging? Dealers, spare parts, warranty support - who knows. If it's run like an airline merger all I can say is buy the factory service manual and call the Snap-On tool guy. <!-- google_ad_section_end --><!-- google_ad_section_end --><!-- / message -->

Thanks, Mopartech, for staying on topic. I have family that works for Chrysler and I hope all your jobs are secure and long lasting. Regarding GM wanting Jeep... I routinely stay in a hotel in Ontario, CA across the street from a Hummer dealership. What a ghost town - and it's been that way for over a year. You can probably sell a Jeep, but no one is buying a Hummer.
 
Cerebus is an investment company not an auto manufacturer. i'm suprised that anyone expected them to do anything but part chrysler out. the loyality to chryler is limited only to it's employees and those of use that have faithully owned mopars for many years through it's ups and downs.
 
Would a merged GM/DC/Chrysler really support what, 15 different car brands and 15000 dealers?? I don't think so, so here is my crystal ball...



After the Merger we...

have one big tight credit (700+ and Flooring) finance company owning all of GMAC

the end of the H3 (now theres a big loss)

Jeep and the Chrysler/Dodge Minivans will carry on

But...

goodbye to all the pretend Jeep Dodge crossover crud

goodbye to the Ram Pickup line in its entirety

goodbye to the Cummins motor

DETROIT (AP) — A potential deal for General Motors Corp. to acquire Chrysler LLC is slowly moving forward, but the transaction is being hampered by an inability to borrow the money needed to make it happen, according to a person involved in the financing discussions.
The person, who requested anonymity because the talks are private, said Monday it could be a couple of weeks before a deal is completed, if it goes that far.

The person also said the federal government may have to contribute money in order to make the deal work, although he was unsure if the government has been approached. GM has been talking with Chrysler owner Cerberus Capital Management LP for at least a month about acquiring the struggling automaker, as Cerberus tries to exit the auto business and GM seeks Chrysler's cash stockpile of about $11 billion.

If the deal is consummated, GM likely would close factories, lay off thousands of workers and perhaps even close Chrysler's giant Auburn Hills, Mich. , headquarters. To do so, GM likely would need to borrow more money for severance packages and other restructuring costs. But that just isn't available right now for a company with a junk credit rating and liquidity concerns like GM, said John Atkins, a fixed-income analyst at IDEAGlobal.com. If it could sell bonds, GM, would likely have to pay an excessive interest rate "north of 20 percent," Atkins said. "We're talking about a company that is well down the credit ladder. "

Fitch Ratings reduced GM's credit rating one notch to "CCC" last month, and Standard & Poor's Rating Service has placed its "B-" rating of GM under review for possible downgrade. Both ratings are noninvestment, or junk, grade. Atkins said Cerberus and GM likely are running out of options as the U. S. auto market continues its slump and both Chrysler and GM continue to burn up cash.
Analysts have said GM has little to gain strategically from taking on Chrysler, but Atkins said it may give the company leverage with bankers who are reluctant to make loans and to get more concessions from the United Auto Workers union. The Wall Street Journal reported Monday that the companies were having trouble arranging financing.

On Friday, another person briefed on the negotiations said top executives of Cerberus and Chrysler had viewed the deal and asked for refinements. In August, Chrysler said it had accumulated $11. 7 billion in cash and marketable securities as of June 30. That figure remains around $11 billion, the same person said, even though Chrysler's U. S. sales are down 25 percent through September, the largest decline of any major automaker.

Detroit-based GM is burning up more than $1 billion per month, with several analysts predicting it will reach its minimum operating cash level of $14 billion sometime next year. GM's sales are down 18 percent, and the company has lost $57. 5 billion in the past 18 months, although much of that comes from noncash tax accounting changes.

GM has pledged to raise $10 billion through cost cuts and another $5 billion through asset sales and borrowing as it tries to outlast a U. S. auto sales slump that could run into 2010.
Company spokeswoman Renee Rashid-Merem said GM is on track with the operational part of that plan.

Chrysler's money pile would help solve GM's cash problem if the credit markets remain inhospitable.

Both automakers have had to deny bankruptcy rumors in recent weeks, saying consumers won't buy cars from a company that looks like it could go out of business.

The deal being discussed calls for Cerberus to hand over Chrysler in exchange for GM's 49 percent stake in GMAC Financial Services. GM sold a 51 percent stake in its finance arm to Cerberus in 2006. Cerberus also would get an equity stake in GM, hoping to get a good return should GM recover when U. S. auto sales bounce back from a serious slump.

Other automakers, including the allied companies of Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co. , also are in discussions about Chrysler, the person said. Simultaneously, Cerberus, which bought 80. 1 percent of Chrysler from Daimler AG in a $7. 4 billion deal last year, is negotiating to acquire Daimler's 19. 9 percent stake.

All that GM, Chrysler and Cerberus have said about the negotiations is that automakers meet all the time. Chrysler Chief Executive Bob Nardelli said Thursday the auto sales drop has created an environment that favors consolidation.

Renault and chrysler have both said that they havn't even talked. hopefully this falls through and somebody that would actually keep the company together buys them.
 
I think GM would gladly retain Jeep, reshape the sheet metal and rebadge the Chrysler/Dodge mini-van as a Chev/Pontiac/Olds/Saturn (GM has never offered a fwd mini-van that anyone wanted) and dump all other Chrysler and Dodge products as well as our beloved Rams.

Chrysler 300Cs are great cars but not huge sellers. Dodge now offers the best police cruiser made. More and more of them are showing up with light bars on their roofs and police logos on their doors. Maybe GM could rebadge the Dodge hemi sedan an Impala (yuk) and keep it also.

I don't see how Ferd could put a Cummins in their junk trucks. They would have to perform a complete redesign of the frame and body to mount a long inline 6 and would then have to design and build a complete new transmission and drivetrain to handle the torque that comes on instantly at 1500-1600 rpm.

If this sale/merger happens I hope that thousands of existing Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealers, Cummins, and all the hundreds of Chrysler suppliers sue hell out of GM and bankrupt GM for their cynical effort to succeed at the expense of Chrysler.

I guess you can tell I'm not in favor of the sale/merger.
 
Its already been well said by cheby that they only want the mini vans because they can't build a good one and jeep because they don't have anything that would make it off road (hummer:-laf) they might keep the charger and challenger but everything else is gone.



maybe cummins will build a sterling 2500-3500 or something so that us dodge guys will have something to look forward to every model year.
 
When 6. 0 Fords came out (in late 2002 IIRC) Ford offered a manual six speed transmission. I drove one just out of curiosity in 2002 and it was a real learning experience and joke.



At the time I had owned my '01 Dodge HO 6 speed for a year or more and was fully accustomed to putting the transmission in first or second gear and letting the clutch out then powering it up. As all of you who have owned one know, you drive a Dodge-Cummins that way, even if it's loaded heavy. Just like a big 18 wheel OTR truck. The habit was so well ingrained in me by that time that I was literally almost unable to drive the 6. 0 Ferd. Each time I let out the clutch I stalled the weak zero torque motor. The ONLY way to drive a V8 diesel is just like a gas small block Chevy V8. You rev up the engine and slip the clutch to get it rolling.



That is the reason, IMO, that Ferd & GM dropped the manual transmissions. A manual transmission makes the complete lack of low rpm torque impossible to hide. It can easily be concealed with an automatic transmission and loose torque converter but with a manual clutch and transmission they are dogs to drive when loaded and annoying when empty.



LOL, I did the same thing with a small 2000# worth of trailer behind me when I worked for a production company.



My dad's 7. 3, you could do that with. but the ZF transmission is kinda "odd" to shift from 1st/low to "2nd", so you drove it like a gasser.
 
I was going to hold out until 2010 and buy a 2011 to replace the 2001, I MAY need to reconsider that plan if the GM takeover happens, because I doubt if the 4th gen body style in the HD line would ever happen, would have to consider buying a 2009 HD ASAP!
