Much of the hoopla surrounding the V8 diesel DuraMax hyping up its arrival was "best in class" this and "best in class" that and "best in class" everthing else.

Yesterday I picked up the Jan 2001 StreetTrucks* magazine and came across an article introducing GM's new lineup of midsize SUVs taking the place of the current Blazer and Jimmy. Quoting from the article it says "The new 4200<cc> is an all-aluminum dual overhead cam straight six that provides the power of a V8 with the fuel efficiency of a six-cylinder. . . . In a effort to create a 'best in class' engine that would dominate the V8 engines of the midsize SUV class, engineers tested 24 engines at wide open throttle for 150,000 miles. . . " While it does appear this will be an impressive engine, it amuses me how GM can get it right with a gasser but not a diesel #ad

Data on Vortec 4200

Bore/Stroke 3. 66" x 4. 01"
Displacement 256cid
Compression Ratio 10:1
HP 270 @ 6000rpm
Tq 275 @ 3600rpm
Valvetrain: Twin cam, 4-valves per cyl

If this engine lives up to expectation it will generate more than 1hp per cubic inch, which isn't bad. And typical of sixes, the bore is smaller than the stroke. Despite the hoopla GM likes to generate about its new products, it is very refreshing for American auto maker to see the light and go back to a basic tried-and-true engine design. #ad

*I am not a subscriber to this magazine, which features slammed street trucks almost exclusively. I thought it would come in handy in finding accessories vendors for items like wheels, hoods, shifter knobs, junk like that. So don't worry, I'm not planning on adding any 5" drop kits or hydraulics or any such thing to my Ram #ad

Sounds like they resurrected the old 250 inline six, which was a decent engine. FI and other modern "stuff" have made the Ford 300 inline six a really nice engine choice, but it too was discontinued.

So, since there is no other inline six currently available.....

Does thast mean the new GM engine has no class?? #ad

ah, come on vaughn your ram would make a good lo-lo

b... ... ... ... ... .

then you would have to do some curb swervin too... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .

The reason those small diameter chain steering wheels were invented was to make it easier to drive with hand cuffs on.

All aluminum I-6?? Sounds an awful lot like the old Mecedes 280 motor! Probably the best gasser they ever built: 2. 8 liters, twin cams, 2valves/cyl. , fuel inj. , light, torquey, good mileage, huge bearings, almost indestructable! (just keep an eye on the water pump, cause if it gets too hot, the head warps!)

Chain steering wheel. . .come on you guys, you disappoint me #ad
Nothing short of a chrome steering column and billet wheel will do in my Ram!!! #ad

Don't forget our own company's great little time proven I-6 engine. The Jeep 4. 0L is a tough, long-lasting and quite torquey beast too! I am glad to hear of I-6 design still living. Mercrdes has another good I-6 and its a DIESEL!! Their 3. 0L (300) engine is overhead cam and very fuel efficient. My mother's car is a 1987 model 300SDL. It gets around 30 mpg and this thing is bigger than a Ford Crown Victoria!!! It will move on too... I have had it up to 120ish MPH and it will turn at least 5000 rpm's. I don't know where it governs, but that's twisting! #ad
Has a little smoke too, which I happen to like! #ad

Long live inline power!!!
Love the old Ford 300's too... My favorite Ford engine ever made... Much tougher and stronger than their little V-8's.

From what I understand, the oil pan on this engine has provisions so one of the front axle shafts can pass through it.

Vaughn has a good point, they hail the all new Duramax and its V-8 configuration while at the same time hail there all new I-6 gasser.

I guess it is all in how you type up the brochure.
