I'm getting a little burnt out chasing re-occurring problems with my 24 valve 5.9 and want to upgrade to a 6.7 but dont want to add DEF fluid so I heard to look for a 08 to a 2012 and avoid the first year of the 6.7 because of the typical first year issues of that motor. My 5.9 only has 170K miles on it and I know thats not alot I just have alot of upgrades including a bulletproof trans but just getting tired of living with the constant half dozen engine codes from a those mods. Am I better off with that 6.7 and new payments all over again or just keep beating my head against the wall with this 24 valve ? Is the 6.7 all the truck I'll need without all the mods the earlier trucks needed? And want to get away from that 1 Ton Ride and hope to feel a better ride in a 2500.

I do own a2008, 6.7L Ram and I would not even hesitate to own a 2013.5 and up truck. I donot have any issues with DEF at all. What I do have are issues with the constant Regeneration thattakes place on the 2007.5 and up to the 2012 trucks. The fuel mileage leavessomething to complain about and the cost of maintenance of the EGR system onthese trucks is expensive.

The onlyreason I still have my 2008 truck is I have added some components to help with thefuel mileage and towing my trailer.

If you get a new one, you won't ever go back! Adding DEF occasionally is nice and easy compared to all the emissions system woes of the 2007.5--2012. The new system gives more power and mileage and no problems, in my experience.

What problems are you having? It's not real clear from your post but it sounds like some of your modifications are causing issues?

I think that you shouldn't abandon your rig because some mods are not working properly, or for another repairable issue, especially if you're otherwise happy with it.
If you are truly ready for a change, don't be afraid of DEF. yes the system is in a learning curve, but we're also learning that it's a good, simple system! All my experience with SCR is with the Ford 6.7, but they are all similar in function and parts. Just this week we had in a system that was contaminated with gasoline, and run to a shutdown fault. We did a flush, replaced the heater, which serves as the pickup tube, and did a thorough flush. The system came back to life, the tests ran, and the codes are gone. Incredible.
The issue I am uneasy with, and I also own a '14 Durango, is the connectivity and technology involved with the vehicles, especially the keyless RF systems and being connected to a network. It's unavoidable, and something you don't need to deal with on the old rig.

I would either stay with what you got or switch to a 04.5-07 5.9L Why take on headache like DPF and EGR if you don't need too? Unless you are going up to a 4th gen (newer than 09) I would stay with a later 5.9 and avoid the problems with DPF and EGR. Some nice things in the 4th gen so the hassles of the emission equipment is more worth it.

Yes I heard that was an issue with those years, But I can probably do the cleaning of the EGR as required if it's accessible.
Thanks for your reply.

I have a deleted 07.5 and also a 06 5.9, stock for stock the 6.7 way outperforms the 5.9 between the extra torque and quicker spool up and the gear ratios of the autos, not sure if it's a bad thing to say here now days or not but get a third gen 6.7 and delete it with efilive and you have incredible power and all the reliability of a late 5.9

i have both. and early 04 auto, and a 08 mega g56. so far i LOVE the 6.7, when used as a truck, it's not a race car. i think i'd fix your issues with the codes on your 5.9 before spending 30K on a new truck. but i just spent lotsa cash on my new to me 08 mega cab manual.

One other component you also may be overlooking is the 6.7 truck may come with the 6 speed automatic transmission (68rfe) with exhaust brake. Not sure if you are looking at an automatic or standard shift transmission.
I have ridden in a 04 truck with the 48re automatic and I didn't like it at all. The 68rfe transmission in my truck is not the most refined but it does do well towing my trailer in having control over the load going down hill and seems to get the load moving pretty easily (3:73 gears).

06-07 have the option for an external brake which is fully integrated with the computer for cruise, warm up and automatic engagement. Manuals had the option since 04.5 if not earlier.

Factory used Jake brand but Pac integrates the same. Not sure about BD and Banks. The external brake has the advantage of not being tired to stock turbo.

Upgrade! I have a '15 with 12,000 miles on it and it has been awesome. Best diesel I've ever had for towing, hands down. I am right at about 3,500 miles since refilling DEF and it is just now dipping below the 100% on the gauge. I think the guys that are having any issues at all are the grocery-getter guys. These trucks are not made to run one mile here, two miles there. They are made to be worked, and they need to get all the way up to temp when running. I have so many buddies that buy diesels because they are "cool", and they should really own gassers.......
