Hey Guys, I have been holding out on Engine mods till my new injection pump, Lift pump, and TPS had no more bugs in them.

Well, after about 2,500 miles, I'll say it's good to go. (I drive only 12K or less a year)

I had a nice Chat with Evan Beck from "The Powershop", and he cut me a deal with injectors. and I plan on getting a PE COMP at the Texas Rally 2001, courtesy of Stefan Kondolay with DTT, oh yah, and a Moparguy BHAF from Danandme. You guys are great.

I'm really excited, and jittery about getting new injectors, I feel like a little kid,, uh, wait, I am a little kid.

Here's the deal, I talked to Diesel Dynamics, and ordered a set of Injector lines, since mine is a early '98. 5 model, they need replaced as they are not re-usable, and I have injectors coming. All these items will be here by Tuesday the 25th of September.

When these items show up at my door, I would like to be able to tackle the task as easy as and quickly as my poor little brain can go without messing things up.

Do yall have any tips or tricks to doing an install?

This will be my first install, and I have never seen it done before, but being there are only 6 cylinders, and relativly easy to get to, I feel I can do it myself.

I need to buy a "crows foot" type wrench as I have heard. What size?

I will be getting instructions with the injectors, but would like to get all the information I can now, so I won't have to sit down and read the directions for an hour, and then run around town trying to get all the tools for the install.

I will try doing a search for all this information tonight, but if Anyone finds, or has info, even just a link, if Yall could inform me about it.

Thanks,

MerrickNJr

Merrick,If you can hold out till the LSTDR rally, there be plenty of hands and knowlage to help you out. I'll bring all the tools needed.

Just make sure you have a torque wrench that can do inch/lbs.

That was one thing I was missing that was hard to come by on the day I decided to do it.

Other than that, it's really not hard. . just do the one closest to the radiator FIRST, then you'll be an expert to get that tricky one near the fire wall.

good luck

I know I'm out of forum here but I have installed a couple of sets. To me the biggest pain was getting the #6 bolt on the valve cover to clear. Be real careful popping the injector lines back in... . my buddy scratched one when going back in due to the injector not being lined up properly.

injector install

Mcummings good luck on your install. Just a word of encouragement, I did my first injector install on monday it went real smooth with no complications, easier than it sounds. I had all the tools on hand called for by the DD instructions. I was able to loosen the rear line without a crows foot. I rigged a breaker bar that worked well. But a crows foot will work great, I'll have one for next time. I see in the near future lower fuel mileage, I cant seem to keep my foot out of it. Well good luck and have fun... ... ... ;) :) Dwayne

WHOOHOO, "BOMBs Away"

I guess I should wash out underneath of my Hood, and wait till I get up to the Texas Rally 2001.

Man, that'd be cool, pull up to the rally with a "Stock" truck, and pull out only needing a new clutch to put out 350-375RWHP (In theory)

I guess I'll wait,,, You bring the Tools, I'll bring a Camcorder and myself.

Wow, TDR Guys, Yall are really Cool.

Thanks WierCummin see you at the TR2001.

KATDiesel, Yep, got the .pdf file, even printed out all 6 pages of it.

I went with the DD1's because Evan gave me a "Pocket Change" price. (J/K)

I recomend Evan, even though, most of the Dealing was Over Netscape/AOL Instant Messanger at 1:30a. m. LOL

The Powershop's number is 360-825-9400.

Thanks cumminsgetme, and mediccummin, I'll remember those hints when Doing the injector install.

Shawn. L. Turbo, Got it covered now, Boy that would have been a pain to get. Being that I'm in a "Tiny" town.

The injector install is now planned for September 29th.

now wait a minute...

I want to see when you put those things in man. I need to watch for the expirence because I plan on getting some some-day, and would like to do it. I saw TXRam, and OKIE-GO do it once, and want to see it done again. I think I will get a reservation at the same hotel as you Merrick. Be looking for a black 2001 with "Cummins Diesel Power" plates on the side.

Merrick,

I hope Evan is sending injector tubes along with those injectors, if not you need to pick up a set since you have a '98. 5

Dean

I don't know, I just know I needed one.

I *THINK* it's like an open end wrench, only the edges of the wrench are thinned down, and shaped like a crows foot.

Maybe has a slight bend in it?

MerrickNJr

How about that, Thanks mikel.

I've seen those before, but couldn't envision that it would be caled a Crows foot.

crow's foot

oh, those. not sure what i've called them in the past. i see a trip to sears in my future. hope i can get out without too much damage to the plastic. an hour in the tools at sears can be expensive. i can always rationalize more than i went for!!:D

Talked me into it.

Got my DD2's on the way. Metric or Standard for the crows foot wrenches? Any consumable parts I might need? Gaskets and such? I read something somewhere on clips or washers?

Any help would be appreciated.

TIA, Garrett

Consumables

The crows foot needs to be 19mm (I have seen 3/4" used, but I don't recommend it). Sometimes the gasket at the bottom of the grid heater gets damaged, so a new one of those might be good to have on hand.

You're going to need an 8 mm socket and wrench for the brackets that hold the injectors in and for the clamps that hold the injector lines.

The last injector install that I did went real smooth, no damage to any of the gaskets and no leaks after the job was done. This may be due to the fact that this particular truck had very low miles on it and the gaskets hadn't had any real chance to cook to the other engine parts real good. The startup with the new injectors produced lotsa smoke for a few minutes as the engine sorted itself out, but it started with about 10 seconds of cranking.

The only washers that I know of are at the bottom of the injectors, be absolutely sure that all the old washers come out with the old injectors. There is one washer on each injector. Your new DD's should have new washers with them.

Good luck,

Mike

Putting them in was the easy part, at least two trucks got a change of injectors at the Texas Rally.

The hard part was getting my VP44 UN-Vapor Locked.

WierCummin did most of the labor, and alot of others helped.

There were so many people helping, watching, words of encouragment that my truck would run tonight,, and some words that told me I'd be staying the night,, that I couldn't remember who was actually around.

Some names off the top of my Head. . WierCummin and his helpers (didn't get their names), Dmurdock, Jacob082, Bill K. , Piers Harry, Fast1, Hyde, TxDieselKid, Danandme, and many others,, If you were there with my injector install, or the 3 hour injector line priming job feel free to chime in.

I got the PE COMP, Bill and Stefan K. installed it in what seemed 15 minutes, and the injectors,, well,, took a little longer, but they are in nonetheless.

My truck now pulls 34Lbs of boost,, which should be 340HP. That is with the stock clutch. As soon as I can afford one Im going to be poppin' in a South Bend,, unless there is a better clutch that can hold 400-450HP

Thanks for all the tips, and everybody who showed up at the TR2001 for your help.
