2001 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4
24 Valve Cummins Turbo Diesel

Looking back about 5 years ago when I was living in Montana and I purchased a Patriot Blue 2001 Dodge 2500 4x4 Cummins diesel with 73,000 miles from Craigslist (Which is my favorite place to shop) for $11,000 dollars. The interior was camel (Tan) in color with heated leather seats and all the goodies to go with it. The truck was in good shape with a few items that need to be addressed on the inside but nothing major. It looked as if someone spilled bleach on the carpet in the back and the carpet was white and the common cracked dash pad. This truck was bone stock and drove like any other Dodge, It wondered all over the road. I first wanted to address the poor steering that most Dodges have so it install the 1998 Dodge HD front steering component’s with all new heavy duty MOOG tie rods and tie rod ends purchased on EBAY for much less than any local auto parts store. Geno’s got the call for the new power steering pump and Borgeson steering box, steering shaft and power steering lines. A steering column bushing kit from Rock Solid Ram Steering and a BD steering box stabilizer was also installed. I also installed a new track bar with a Luke’s Link. This fixed all death wobble and the truck tracked straight and steering was tight. About 4 months after that my transmission started to have fits and it was time for a beefed up transmission. I knew that I was going to pump the power up so I had a Goerend transmission built with billet shaft’s, ATS billet flex plate, ATS 5 Star torque converter and an ATS Deep pan. All transmission parts had been purchased from GOS Performance out of Livingston Montana. Just for peace of mind and it is so cheap I also installed an apps noise isolator from BD. Now the truck shifts fantastic and pulls like never before. Now I am not made of money but I do have a good job and I wanted to build the truck when the budget allowed. So back to Craigslist I go. I found a brand new never installed 3" lift with shock for $200 dollars. Next I found a brand new set of 33" BFG MK2 Mud Terrain tires never used and mounted on Weld Cheyenne wheels for $1200 dollars. I also located an Edge Comp box with the Hot code for $200 bucks. This was a good start for a face lift and some more power. I de-badged and remover the black bumpers from the side of the truck except for my Cummins sticker on the back window and the Dodge Ram emblem on the grill. I built a custom 5" 14 gauge 316 stainless steel exhaust that I purged and TIG welded. In line with the exhaust is a Diamond Eye resonator and a Hush Power Muffler. With this combination the truck had a nice exhaust note which was not to loud inside the cab. I fabricated an awesome set of 2” diameter 316 schedule 80 seamless stainless steel traction bars with my own machined inserts. I added a host of DiPricol gauges to keep an eye on all the engine vitals. At this point I still wanted to add more power but no crazy power(Although it would be fun) so I went with a set of Dynamite Diesel 100hp injectors, Industrial Injection Hot Rod VP 44 and a Silver Bullet turbo from Industrial Injection. I also had an ATS 3 piece Pulse manifold installed along with a AirDog 100 filtration system. I then turned to Gale Banks for the Monster intake so I could install the Snow Performance MPG MAX water injection system. For the air intake AFE was called up and a stage 2 kit was installed. ARP head studs held the head in place for the higher boost pressure. At this point the truck was running a little over 500hp and it was perfect for what we towed and for a little fun when empty. Somewhere in the mix we moved our family to California due to the poor economy and I got a fantastic new job. Since we tow a lot of trailers (Horse, Boat, Flatbed ect.) we had a B&W turnover goose neck hitch installed and also bought the B&W companion fifth wheel hitch. Now we can tow anything we wanted. Again this is a project that has taken 5+ years to bring together. I then wanted to take care of the inside so I replaced the carpet and installed all new insulation and a sound deadening kit for the whole cab from Quite Ride Solation’s. The dash pad was ordered and was a pain to install but looked great when completed. Now the interior looks great and the noise on the inside is much more comfortable and even the stereo now sounds fantastic. Now that the power is right for my towing needs I wanted to change out my electric heated mirrors for some flip up electric heated towing mirrors and I added a LEER camper shell all color matched to the truck. The outside was now perfect. Geno's garage has been most helpful with new radiator hoses, drive belt and all new suspension and cab bushings. The folks at Geno's are fantastic to work with and the prices are fair. I can order from Geno’s and have all parts shipped to California and still get them for less money than any local part store. Finally that the truck is perfect in my eyes and my wife and two girls love it also. It has been a head turner and a few times I have been approached and asked if truck was for sale. Most of the information I have gotten for my build was from TDR and Diesel Power magazine. Several of the articles from your magazines about horsepower, towing and repair options inspired me to research the products that are out on the market. I used only high quality parts for my build from the best companies in the business. It’s funny how such a little bump in power will lead to other additions to a truck. I have had other Dodge trucks in the past which have been all diesels and even my 2003 (Which I no longer have) was in Diesel Power magazine but this 2001 truck holds something special. It’s amazing all the time, effort and pride that goes into your ride to make it the perfect truck to be Stolen January 12th 2014.

PS. Keep up the Great Work.
The photo above was in the early stages of the build.

I can relate to your loss, I had a beautiful Z28 that I bought totaled and did a frame off restoration with. Took 3 years of money, sweat, and late nights to get it on the road. I got to drive it the better part of a summer before it was stolen.
Sorry for your loss

Hey Thanks. It was also discovered that who ever stoled the truck also stoled a bunch of tools out of our ranch truck. I can't stand thieves. This person or person's if caught will pretty much get a slap on the hand and may be a few days in jail then let go. They will be out stealing more stuff again. Who ever stole the truck didnt care about what it looked like. They drove through 3 barbed wire fences which two of them are easy fixes but the third one it pulled all the T post to the side for 500 feet and busted the wire all the way down the fence line. We have about $2000 to $2500 damage to the fence and it will all have to be redone.

Just when I was ok with truck not being found and moving onto something else I get a call from the police mentioning they had located my truck but it looks as if had been repainted. They also mentioned that it was out of fuel. My truck was recovered about 15 miles from my house. The truck had been gone for 10 days and no longer looks like the above photo but none the less it is back home. The truck has been painted twice. Once sprayed with black antiskid paint and then once with white paint and a brush. The body has a lot of damage from running through 3 fences on our property and shearing off many fence posts on the way out. At least they pounded most of the dents out. The topper, traction bars, license plates and my tool box are missing. The interior which was once tan and is now black. Both front inside doors panels, the door sills, the entire dashboard and some of the carpet have been sprayed black. The headliner is torn up along with the driver’s leather seat. The gauge pod was ripped off and shoved back on. The right rear tail light was tied in with bailing twine. The transmission oil cooler, A/C condenser and the intercooler will have to be replaced due to around 500 feet of barbed wire that ran between the grill and the top of the front bumper. The grill, driver’s side headlight and most of the bumper plastic is broken. We found marihuana, ammunition and a bunch of clothes inside the cab and in the bed. It looks as if the person was living in the truck and planned on keeping it awhile. The location of the truck was on private property and the ranch hand told us he tried to help the person out by giving him a gallon of diesel to get back the fueling station so he could fill up. They tried to start the truck but didn’t know how to prime the injection pump plus the truck was pointing down a hill so the gallon of fuel was at the front of the tank. After they tried to get the truck started the ranch hand said the guy took his backpack out of the truck and beat feet down the road. This was when the ranch hand called the police. The fuel pressure gauge when I got in the truck was reading zero. I put five gallons of fuel in and primed the air out. When I tried to start the truck the batteries had almost been drained. They must have tried for a while to get it started but could not. I did get it started but it ran kind of funky and when driving home it was surging and had lack of power. I knew the miles on the truck before it was stolen and I checked them on the way home and they drove almost 600 miles. I hooked up my scanner once I got home and found it giving me the death code P0216. I have 16psi to the pump but I’m afraid that if they tried to start it for a long period of time with no fuel this may be the cause of the code, but it still starts and runs funny. I cleared the code and it comes back. Needless to say whatever happens with insurance (fixed or totaled?) I will resurrect the truck, get it fixed and back on the road. By the way the fool who stole my truck left his ATM inside the center console.

Thats heartbreaking, but at least you got it back. Mine was doused in 5 gallons of gas and burned to the ground the same day it was stolen.
Did you have full coverage?

Glad to hear you have full coverage but still doesn't fix the fact someone destroyed your truck.. The more I read the harder it was to believe. I can't imagine how hard it would be to see your truck after.

Well the verdict is in from insurance. “Totaled” Insurance said the truck had almost $19 thousand dollars in damage to the interior and exterior of the truck. I was able to purchase the truck back for $2832.00 and I also got a nice size check I can use for repairs. I have since hit craigslist and found a very nice one owner Patriot Blue 2001 Ram 1500 4x4. The body and interior are in fantastic shape and they only wanted three thousand for it. I will use this truck as my donor to get my truck repaired and back on the road. It will take me a few months to get all the work done but I am looking forward to having it completed and back on the road. I have already made another 5” stainless steel exhaust system (The last one was smashed and bent) and traction bars. I am also thinking of installing a long arm kit for the front suspension.

That's awesome everything is working out for you! Given the situation things could be much worse. I don't know what I'd do if something like that happened to my ride, I would never swap it for a newer one. Glad to hear you are keeping the old girl, it's nice to see 2nd gens still going strong down the road.

I have been following this thread and can only say I'm sorry. I know how much I love my truck and assume it is the same with you.

I do note: "By the way the fool who stole my truck left his ATM inside the center console." I have a number of friends who are or have retired from being municipal or state policemen and the consensus is that the vast majority of the people who do this stuff are simply too stupid to do anything else.

This week some guy was arrested here for robbing a restaurant. He called in a carry-out order and robbed the cash register when he arrived to pick up the order. When you call in carry-out they ask for your phone number. The guy gave them his correct home phone number.

It is too bad we have to carry the burden of stupid.

Russell, that guy was notable enough to make the Cleveland news :-laf
You can't fix stupid.

Good that you got your truck back. `Round here, they end up in Mexico within two to twelve hours. I have to literally keep mine locked up in an undisclosed location under guard.

Well I could not stand seeing the truck sit looking ugly so I got the pressure washer out and started to see if the paint would come off. It was slow going so I tried spraying some Super Clean on the body and it made getting the white paint of much easier. The black spray paint that is under the white paint would not come off. So I tried some Goof Off and it softened the black paint and the pressure washer is taking it right off. I have about three quaters of the truck done and it is starting to look like it did before it was stolen except for all the new body damage. I am going to post the different phases of repair when time permits. But for now it's looking much better than the Ghetto truck it was.

Boy is that sexy!

Any internal mods? Injectors? Turbo?

Can't wait to see the rest of the truck!
