Just thought I would post some pics of my burnt out starter contacts. This just goes to show how bad these things do burn out.

How does one know when it is time to swap out the starter contacts? Is it when the starter no longer starts the truck? I have 79k on the truck now. If it should be done as PM then i'll have to order some and do the swap if it ever warms up.

Mine wasn't doing the "no start" thing, my starter was actually "sticking ON". It is an easy job for anyone to do..... took me about an hour, and it is a cheap fix, $35 or so. Makes nothing but good sense to do it before it becomes a problem

WHEN should i do it?????

Alot depends on how much OFF and ON you do. this is where the ware comes from. I had about the mileage (not a daily driver) you have and mine was worn 50% on the heavy contact side. So to avoid a big problem, Do It Now, or ASAP. You may have to get innovative to remove the bolts though. Some are very tight. The bolt head looks like a special wrench, It is'nt, just a # 10 12 point.

Mine started doing the no start number unless you hit the key 5 or 6 times so I upgraded to Larry Bs. Took less than an hour. Mine looked exactly like kboettchers.

Thanks for the replies. I will put that on my list of things to do when it warms up this spring. So were the starter bolts put on by the same person that put the original oil filter on or are they just in a tight spot?

dezeldog... . if I were you I would run as fast as you can and get those parts NOW... ... cuz your right, you probably just jinkzed yourself;)

You probably dont need a new plunger, just the two contacts, but its a good idea to do it all while you have the starter off.

It may have been hard too tell from the pictures but my plunger was quite pitted too, I personally would recommend changing the plunger too... . JMO:p

Mine looked the same as the ones pictured. Had to hit the starter a few times before it would catch. Had around 140-150 thousand on the truck at the time. Don't remember for sure.
