Anyone use or heard about the silent recall on load range E tires like those on many new fifth wheels? Like Wrangler HT? Friends just got all the tires replaced on their fifth wheel for $18 each. Dealer said it was a "silent" recall. Had a bulge in 2 of them.

Yep, it was on the LT235s, but not on the other sizes. My Hitchhiker II had LT225s on it from the factory and Goodyear wouldn't do anything about them throwing tread. I put a set of real tires on it--Michelin XPS Radials--end of problems too.

Oh great! My '98 HitchHiker has the LT 235's from Goodyear. They look great, wear well and haven't given me any problems. Yet! I know Goodyear added some nylon belts after '95 or '96 to address this problem. Is there any way to tell if they are the upgraded version without taking the tires or trailer to a dealer?
I sent an email to the Goodyear Technical people asking how I could tell if mine had the nylon upgraded tread. It's simple, if it says on the side of the tire "6 ply tread, 2 polyester + 2 steel + 2 nylon" it is the improved version. If it doesn't say + 2 nylon, it is the earlier version that is prone to throw treads. Lucky for me mine are the newer improved version... .

I have the 225-16's on my 2000 Terry. Their the Goodyear HT's. I will have to check for the +2 nylon.
If my Front PS was to throw a tread, it would wipe out where all the propane hooks up (soft copper lines) which would probably result in a BIG FIRE. Of coures Fleetwood don't seam to think it would be a problem, I here people tried to get them to recall it, but nope!
Just hope I could get the truck out of the way before the camper burns to the ground!

I think you are probably OK with the 2000 Terry. They changed the tires around '96 or so. My '98 HitchHiker has the newer version of tires with the nylon belts. The original Goodyear tires on my '96 truck did not have the nylon and one hot day out on the highway, with my Lance camper in the bed, it threw the right rear tread. It destroyed the right side of the pickup box and put a hole in the bottom part of the camper that hung past the end of the pickup. Goodyear gave me one new tire free and 3 others at a big discount but would not admit to any problem. Lucky insurance paid for all the damage, well over $2000. Body shop at my dealer said it was the second one they had seen that month with the same problem. I was also lucky that the tire didn't go flat so I was able to pull over and put on the spare.
Great info... I went out yesterday after reading it and checked the 235E/16 Wrangler HT's on the new Jayco. They have the 2 nylon belts.

Goodyear Problems Continue?
New failures of Goodyear LT235/85R16 tires with "S" stamp are reported in the February 2002 issue of Trailer Life magazine at page 19.
The writer had three sidewall separations on a fifth wheel RV(make not identified). So those of us running Goodyears on our tailers who have the new tires with the "S" apparently need to still be concerned?
After RV ACtion Line got involved, Goodyear ended up replacing all the rig's tires, seven total on a 3 axle rig.
By the way, my fiver has 15 inch tires (size not recallable right now) and my new Goodyears bought last summer, with the "S", were made in Canada. Have towed some 3,000 miles with them without further problems, but have yet to run in really hot weather like the South West in August. But we're planning on a West Coast run this next summer Anyone else heard of continuing Goodyear problems?

I had the 16-inch Goodyear’s on my 5th wheel. Last year two of them started to separate real bad. Took them in to Americas Tire Company. They called Goodyear and got the ok to replace them. My 5er is a 1999, I had to pay $20. 00 per tire for the replacement. The good news was that I got to replace them with Michelin tires. Saved me $175. 00 per tire Oo.
Around July 2001, Goodyear replaced all of my 5er's size 225 marathons with the upgraded circle "S" marathons. All I paid for was the mounting and balancing. It was actually a pleasant experience dealing with the customer service rep I had.
Stockard, sorry that they refused to make the exchange for you. I told a local friend about my exchange and he called Goodyear also for exchange approval on 225s and it was granted.

Goodyear is replacing LT245/75R16 and LT235/85R16 tires sold under 51 brand names, but is directly notifying only customers with LT245/75R16 tires AND ONLY in 15-passenger van or ambulance applications. This is according to an article in the 2/7/02 Washington Post newspaper at page E3. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A36174-2002Feb6.html)

My earlier post is triggered by the 2/02 Trailer Life magazine blurb. Since then I’ve recalled that my 5er’s Goodyear tires are ST225/75R15s. When I had the two blowouts last summer and got replacement Goodyears, I was told that the new tires with “S”
appearing after the brand name had the new belt structure and were safe. Based on the TL piece, it appears that may not be the case. He had the “S” marked tires and had three
identical sidewall failures. Note that his triple axle 5er has the LT235/85R16 tire for which no notice is being given.
Our heavy 5ers put a lot of load on the tires. In my case about 2000 pounds per wheel, static. Dynamic tire loading must run considerably higher. Passenger van and ambulance tire loadings probably are less... guess it's a matter of risk to people vice property?
Now I’m wondering, what are the 51 brand names involved? I've Carlyles on another 5er, understand they're made by Goodyear too. Not sure. They've worn well and run good.

Apparently Goodyear is having its Firestone-type problems with profitability.

I have Marathon ST225/75R15's on my 5er. Should I be concerned?
Its a 97 Mallard that I bought last February. Prior to my purchaing the trailer it was really never towed much that I could tell.

i called Goodyear on this one. They said the goodyear model affected in this recall was the HT design. and they fixed the problem in 1998.
the reason I called is my orginal RT/s tires kept getting little bubbles on the sidewall, just above the rib bead. This bubble would then pop, after which you could stick your finger in the hole and feel the sidewall belts had shifted. over time They replaced 3 our of 5, which left me with 4 different size tires on the truck, not my choice of things to do with a POSI, So i dumped Badyears and went with Coopers SRM-II's (and love them). But I kept the badyears waiting to see if they recall them later!
