Nevada HP pulled me over a while back (80+ in a 55)

He said he hadn't heard a Cummins sound quite like mine, (4" short exhaust--straight-thru/front of wheel)... said my "exhaust leak" was beyond 75dB and, if he could meter it, would be a ticketable noise level... .

need just a muffler, to mellow it down a bit. needs to be 4" I/O

who has a good, durable, cheap one? I'd even go with a Cherry-Bomb-type glass-pak, if one of those would do any good... rm

When I got my 21471, the Walker guy said they have a short (about16") 4" straight thru glass or steepack. Said it was slightly louder then mine and sounded GOOD! Don't know the number tho. Craig

Did he happen to say which vehicle codes required 75 dB? Accoring to the vehicle code, vehicles with a GVWR of more than 6000 lbs, the acceptable level is 84dB where the speed limit is 35mph or less and 90dB where the speed limit is more than 35mph. Both measurements are to made at 50 feet from the center line of the travel lane with the vehicle in motion.

Sounds to me like he was just being a jerk. That's so uncharacteristic for an NHP trouper.

I have/had(where the hell is that thing?) a decibal meter. You would be surprised how much noise it takes to register that high.

Get it checked, yourself, then see what they say.

Also, how is he going to check you going that fast?

I never expected my exhaust tone to drop by putting dual exhaust on. Run long five inch tips too. But it is quieter than a single pipe. Just a low rumble.

Right now I have a 4" turbo back Bully Dog with muffler (Rapid Flow), and I love the sound. The tail pipe is still only 4". If I go to a 5" tip, will it change the tone any, or is it a waste of clams??

Thanks

Nevada's law enforcement folks at the State level are quite simply amazing. They operate to make revenue for the State and to show their inferiors they are actually doing something all day---I know of one situation where a NHP type not only stopped, but CITED a detective from another agency running code to get to a situation in another part of the State..... it got tossed out, obviously, but HEY to his bosses its a stat.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to have him go get a decibel meter and park at the end of your block just to make an issue of it... ... . if in fact there are State statutes that deal with noise.

I wouldn't trust him/them for anything, and I work in the same profession elsewhere.

Very Rogue

Walker resonator, 4": 21464, 7" diameter shell, 12" long, total length 20". Be aware that this is probably more useful to fulfill a requirement to have a visual evidence of a muffler than to reduce noise very much.

Walker makes a number of 4" mufflers, some too long or large in diameter to fit easily. The two popular ones are 21471, 7" x 27" shell, total length 36"; and 22572, 9" x 20", total length 27". I have found the 21471 to be a good compromise, moderate noise, virtually no restriction. Its core has perforated pipe, no louvers in the flow path. Diesel Dynamics and some others use this one.

I run a Dynomax 4" straight through bullet muffler. It is 16" long with a 5" OD shell. It is mostly to make the inspection station happy and does not do a lot for the sound. It does take the edge off though. It is P/N WLK-24217. See it at www.summitracing.com

Howdy, all!!!

FWIW... the guy wasn't a jerk a'tall... . I was lucky... .

here's what happened... .

I'm on my way to work (gotta be there @ 5:00am every day :p )

Having my typical nice drive, just being a rapid "model citizen", and blow thru an unoccupied/unpopulated "work zone" (55 limit thru there)... the HP guy is entering (just past Rainbow Curve, heading southbound on US95 for you Lost Vegetarians)... . traffic flow being what it is, I blow his door off

He pulls me over. He's one of the "commercial" guys in the ramcharger/blazer/bronco sized SUV's, not a car or motorcycle guy.

He's only got one more ticket in his booklet, and intended to save it for somebody w/ GVW of 10K or more, so I just got the warning(s), rather than have him write up a low-value ticket on his last page. :)

And he might have said "84dB" I had 75 in my head, though... .

He also said the NHP's only got 2 meters in the whole state. One up near Reno, and another that he can't find, down here in the south..... His calibrated ear said "loud", though... . rm

so 84dB seems to be the magic number for exhaust sound level. good to know. . i know where my spl meter is, but the batteries are dead i think. .

I've been counselled by the CHP and the NHP. I usually get a nice little piece of paper to show I've been counselled. :( :( :(

I'd tell'em I'm partially blind in my left eye and can't see the tach...

and half deaf in my right ear, so I need it that loud to know when to shift. :D
