I'm posting this as there is some info about the cooling fan that might help others that may be having a cooling problem. I lost the fan clutch when coming home from PDR a week ago. Was pulling the travel trailer so I had some interesting hill climbs considering it was about 100 degrees! :) When empty the temps were normal. I had been fighting a slight heat problem for the past year and replaced the radiator about 4 weeks ago with a new unit

I had replaced the clutch a year and a half ago with a NAPA unit so this time I figured I would go back with a Dodge unit. Called the dealer and had him get a clutch. When talking to him he said the computer flagged a new fan whenever the clutch was replaced. He said he thought it was an upgrade fan but wasn't sure. My first reaction was no, don't need a new fan but then thought that maybe a balance issue or blade problem might have contributed to the failure. Sooooo, I told him to get the new fan also.

The new fan is different that the old! The diameter and blade count is the same but the blades have more twist/curve to them, are thinner metal, and are made with stiffening ribs. The old fan blades have no ribs but has thicker metal. I put this thing together last night but have not driven it yet. Probably won't notice anything different until I tow again.

Just wondering why you didn't go for an electric fan?

I would have figured that this would present the perfect opportunity to rob less power from the engine and provide better thermal control in the engine compartment.

Stan,

I did the same thing on my '93 and my sons '90. The new fan and clutch work better than the old OEM, especially when towing my trailer ;)

Steve, the part numbers are :

Fan- 52026653

Clutch module- 52028760

The price, and this is from the dealer and you may be able to beat it if you work on them, is $70 for the fan(list was 76) and $143 for the clutch(list was 175).

I know Pastor, I shouldn't be putting the prices on the board! :)

OK guys, I got a PM from a member that shall remain un-named at this time. If you have a good relation with your dealer, you can get a LOT better pricing than what I paid! Beat 'um up!! :)

I'm not real impressed with their serpentine belt either. I got one tangled up in my a/c clutch to the tune of 255 dollars. SteveinAZ

I was just wondering if their is a definate way to tell if the fan clutch is trash or not mine has 164K on it and I think its toast.

As far as I know when the fan clutches go bad they lock up..... so the fan turns all the time. This is fail safe engineering. Mine was weeping oil, I switched to electric fans, which moved 5000 cfm together. It never cooled right... . especially with the 5 er on. I got her really hot. So I am back to the fan and clutch. It works much better. Some others might have had better luck with electric fans... . but for me I'll be looking at Paccool's upgraded fan.

?!?!?!?!?! Dealer never told me about the fan upgrade! The fan clutch will also fail to engage adequately and/or late - another symptom of a fan clutch failure or impending failure.

Just changed mine - one heck of a difference.
