We also got the $149 update notice. We very seldom use. What good is it if my wife can't enter a address while I drive, so she uses Wayz on her phone. We also have a Garmin hand held and will soon buy a RV specific Garmin.

I think many auto manufacturer's charge for NAV renewal . Garmin does have free life time subscriptions on some units , however unless you have super high hookups loading them through the internet take about 8hrs.
Usually only takes me about 30min.

Do the roads/speed limits/turn lanes/evacuation routes and other things really change that much in 2-6 years time?

Probably not worth the cost unless laws change that change all the roads in a state?

Am I the only old geezer left who prefers to simply consult a paper map (or Google Maps) before starting my trip? I have a Garmin GPS that I got for my wife, but I never use it. I find it annoying for (at least) a couple of reasons:
1. I don't like to have no clue where I'm going, hoping that the GPS will guide me properly (which, as it has proven on numerous occasions, it does not always do!).
2. If I DO know where I'm going, then the GPS usually tries to route me some other way, telling me (for example) to turn left every few blocks, while continually intoning "Recalculating" in the intervening periods.

For as often as I actually need it I use my phone mounted on the dash for Nav. Even if I know where im going I will punch in my destination before leaving if I'm on a time crunch. If there are any delays, road construction, accident, etc. an alert will pop up on the map. This saved me from sitting in traffic for 3 hours on Rt 90 enroute to drop my mother off at the airport when there was a multiple fatality wreck. I was able to catch 271 before getting stopped, would not have known about the accident in time to reroute and very well may have missed her flight. I don't know if modern GPS specific units do this but neither my truck nor my wife's 4 year old car gives real time alerts.

Probably rhe difference between dial up and broadband. ;)

NO, I have had good link speed. It appears to me that they throttle the server output it each user. It has not mattered the time of the day also. SnoKing

You may want to read the fine print on the "Lifetime free updates" On my Magellan anyway...off their web site.

"For all lifetime map subscriptions, lifetime refers to the useful lifetime of the device, considered to be 3 (three) years from the date of the first use. For all lifetime map subscriptions, you will receive map data updates when such updates are made available on Magellan’s website during the device’s useful life for that compatible Magellan device. “Device’s useful life” refers to the period during which the device has all required technical capabilities, including sufficient memory capacity and current operating system, to download and use current map data. A device’s useful life is considered to be a maximum of 3 (three) years from the date of the first use. A device will be considered past its useful life if it is more than 3 years old or if no updates have been downloaded for more than 2 years (24 months)."

Not being able to use the nav while driving and why should we not text while driving, just makes no sense . :D

This is really goona PO some https://www.turbodieselregister.com/threads/uconnect-map-updates-for-2014.259313/page-3#post-2521425

I have Hippy43 stick I tried everything to hack in NO go, Hippy provide the facts, FCA receives the Update's from Garmin at $0.00 that's right free, Here.com and FCA can go pound sand on their Nav, its obsolete anyways, even My New 2019 is wrong on Speeds etc, My 2018 is the same as My 2015. I will jail break in the future before I pay the blood money for Nav update.
