Well, as the weather heats up around here, my truck starts smoking when driving it around the area. (Balt/Wash. DC) Of course mainly from take offs. It's kind of "boggy" too. Specs> '01, AT, Edge Comp, BD-1s, stock HY-35, BHAF. If I turn the AC on it get worse. I currently live/work at under 1000' elev. , but will be moving to 7000' about mid summer. I'm looking for some suggestions to keep the power I have, but clean it up the black smoke. Yeah, I know, this may seem antithetical to some of you, but... ... . On the dyno it puts out 350/800 on 5/5. It's a work truck and I mostly have the Comp on 3/3 unless situations call for more. ;) Oh yeah, It's got 174K miles and the injectors have about 140-150K. I've had the oil checked by Blackstone and everything is in great spec. No fuel in the oil or silicone either.

What do ya think? New injectors? New programing or box? Or both? I'd like to keep thing reasonable, so new turbo is out for the time being. TIA

Try turning the box off or set to defuel. Sub Level 1 and 2.

Trying to keep the power and fighting off the smoke in hot conditions will be tough. Just have to learn to drive around it a little.

Things that can create that problem are #1 injector breaking pressures have dropped. #2 Injection pump diaphram leaking (hot ambient temperatures make it worse). #3 Injection pump housing bad (Advance bore has been updated to a steel bushing). #4 Lift pump bad (Needs to maintain at least 10 psi as this causes advance to change). There are a few other possibilities but this is a start!

I would have to say that the smoke problem is directly related to the Comp and injectors with the stock turbo, you're simply not getting the air to accomidate the fuel, and all that extra fuel may just be overspeeding the turbo a bit, causing the intake charge to be superheated that means even less usable air in the chamber. I'd say save up and get a turbo. And until then run the Comp on Sub level 1 or 2 like Fishin Guide said.

Thats just my contribution though.

Edit: And if this work truck is your truck, get a fuel pressure gauge.

Well, that was cheap. It will be really tuff to run the Comp on 1 or 2. I've tried it. Ugg! It does help though. FWIW I've had gauges for almost 4. 5 years. (I was lucky enough to have found out about TDR before I bought the truck. ) FP, transmission temp. , EGT/boost. FP is always at in the 14-16 PSI range. I moved the LP back by the tank years ago. The injectors could be tired. Just not leaking. A turbo's not out of the question if that's all it may take to alleviate some of the smoke. More research is called for. Thanks
