well, my first post, but i've lurked and learned for quite a while. I've never had anything to contribute, but here's a doosey and maybe someone can benefit from my stupidity. i've had this truck for about 3 months and decided to call tst and get a #8 (try and get as much life out of the trans as poss). I've installed plates before so no big deal but i did notice the gov lever did not hit either the stock plate or the #8. (yes, fuel shut off was in the up position-- see, i lurked and learned ). Ok, so i go to the pdr technical and get the directions for adjustment. I'm pretty good mechanically but being naturally lazy, i fiqure i don't need to remove the fuel filter for the adjustment process and i make a screwdriver to fit in the pump but not so long as to hit the fuel filter (its just a 3" power driver bit ground down some, and its all metal). well its all going good, i take the 10mm deep socket, loosen the nut, then take my custom screwdriver and feel my way in the slot, start start turning and the bit falls out of my fingers and into the f83241juewqmjvf pump!!! OK--take a deep breath---I stare at the situation and remove what i hope is a drain plug in the bottom of the pump. yea--it is. i remove the fuel plate, take a suction gun and remove remaining oil. take flexible magnate probe and start pobing. Luckily, after about 10 minutes of careful probing i came up with the metal bit (lucky it was metal), finished adjusting the lever, installed plate(well, visa/versa) and all was well. I,m now 10 years older, but for all you diy's, objects can be retrived from the pump.

sorry bout the long post and i truly could not have done any of this with out the expert guidance from this site.

thanks guys

Yeah--i read a post once where somebody dropped the screw down there and fished it out. (u maybe). i was real careful with the screww , but forgot about what was in my hand.

I dropped the screw and locknut into the thing but was able to retrieve it with a magnet on a flexible shaft. Didn't have to drain it or remove the plate. Was able to get if from the rear.

I really shouldn't be doing things like that without an EMT standing by. Or, at least someone that is good at CPR.

oh, yu're killin me!! sure take advantage of a newbie. but, yes, i'm sure. i was so freaked out during this event i sat back, got a cup of jo, (beer would have just made things worse), stared at everything, reread pdr instructions, and double checked everthing. i put the 3/4 inpact gun with the 10mm socket on that lock nut and just sat there at full air pressure--bamm, bammm, bamm. oh it's tight all right!! Oo.

That is good stuff... ... bam, bam, bam!

I've dropped the arm screw, washer, spring retainer, shims all in the pump at one time or another but the best was breaking the timing pin off... ... ..... pulled the pump to get that out... ... . 3 hour timing change!

Nope. Not me. Haven't needed to adjust mine, even sliding the plate full forward. :D

well i'm glad it wasn't you--i don't wish it on anyone. was pretty weird how my lever wasn't even close to hitting either the stock plate nor the #8. both wire lock ties were on the cover screws so i don't think it has been messed with and it was a stock plate in there.

would there be any problems occuring with the gov lever never hitting the fuel plate?? i haven't been on the road since adjusting it, but tomorrow i've got to tow, so i'll see if there;s a difference
